Hi guys,
planning to visit Ireland for the first time, sometime around the solstice in June. Never been before, and the only place I've got planned to visit so far is Newgrange. not even sure if the trip will be for one week or two yet.
I will mostly be camping and there will probably be three of us, on GS's.Anyways, would like sugestions for places to visit.
All advice mutch appreciated in order to aid planning the trip:thumb2

Not to put you off but it's the winter solstice that's the big deal at Newgrange which is a passage toume. I've spelt it wrong. For a portal toumb try the Brownehill Dolmen near Carlow town. It's very impressive for a 5 thousand year old burial site. It still has not been explained how ancient man built it. JJH

Sorry please don't let me put you off visiting Newgrange it's still impressive at any time of the year. JJH

Give us a clue

What sort of thing are you after?
Twisty roads
Epic scenery
Fantastic Guinness
Keep South West and you can't go far wrong.
More details on request.:thumb

JJH, thanks for the advice to visit Brownehill. will take a look. I was aware that the winter solstice is the main one for Newgrange, but would still like to visit. I've got an interest in neolithic and bronze age monuments :thumb2

Modelman, Twisty roads,Epic scenery,Fantastic Guinness......all would be most welcome. We are totally open to sugestions.
Would be good to do a spot of wild camping

G'morning son ... on Anglesey at the mo after a superb week on the Emerald Isle :D

As Modelman says, South west corner superb, but you really can't go wrong in Ireland for the twisty roads, epic scenery and fantastic Guinness, especially over on the west coast :aidan

Dunno about wild camping either, but four nights bed and breakfast, with two full three course evening meals, in the superb Westport Inn .... £130.00 :D

Bier later in the week maybe?

West coast, taken last week :thumb

The Beara Peninsula is a great place. Ardgroom and Castletownbere Stone circles are particularly good. There are also plenty of wedge tombs and standing stones. I could send you the coordinates. Allihies is a great village and wild camping would be easy enough.

Why not also consider heading up to Fermanagh in North Ireland and having a great weekend with fellow travelers at the Horizons Unlimited Ireland get together on the weekend of 26/28 June. Great company, great Guinness, great food, great presenters .........and great craic. And, as a bonus, fantastic roads and antiquities to explore in Fermanagh and adjoining counties.

Scotboxer, isn't that the pub that belonged to Tom Crean? I'll put that on my list of places to visit.

Richie, any info, locations etc of neolithic and bronze age monuments would be greatly appreciated. Both myself and my brother are interested in them. Done a fair few trips round Scotland visiting the ancient monuments, including Shetland and the Orkney isles.
If you are interested in stone circles I highly recommend a book called 'places of power' by Paul Devereaux. Brilliant book :thumb2

Eclectic, the Horizons unlimited meet may well be added to our to do list as well :thumb2

Dad, great to hear you had a superb week. Will pick your brains as to routes etc when you get back. B&B will be considered, but we will only just have got back from our Spain trip on the bikes when we head off to Ireland so money may dictate camping:nenau
You're on for a beer later in the week. Might even be able to make it to the Tut on Thursday if I don't get any overtime :thumb2

Thanks for all the advice guys.

The Wild atlantic Way

Everything you could possibly want is along this Route . 2500 Klms .
You could wild camp till your heart is content , or live it up !.. Its up to you .
Just noticed the £ V € today is at €1.40 to the £ , either way you cant loose.
Sell your GBPs , anywhere you getting +35% , at the miniute its a half price holiday.

It certainly is and the thing about the Winter Solstice is that there's a very limited number of places inside and they're allocated annually in a lottery.

We won't have the debate about whether or not it's a burial mound but if anyone's interested, I'd suggest reading the works of Christopher Knight and Robert Lomas. It would help if you're also interested in the origins of Freemasonry and are prepared to countenance that Newgrange might have been mentioned in the Old Testament.

Kerry is good & better off the beaten track - if you make it this far I'd happily point you in that direction.
