Loads of the US guys use Spot. It kind a makes sense in a country where a multi billionaire crashes his and despite the largest search mission for one person the country has ever had they still dont find his body/plane for 6months, by which time his body had been carried off/eaten by the local wildlife.

Dont know if its quite so necessary for a rideout in the peaks ..................;)

When i go around europe i'm taking the stuff that will give me a better chance of survival.

I know it may seem absurd, you can however die very quickly if trapped & bleeding out. I've bought one & its going to give me a greater sense of adventure; prehap's even boost me towards the black-sea.

Sir James of Quorndon, suits you :P

Dump the spot and wear a whistle around your neck on a cord :P

But that spot thing is a martime GPS beacon....the accuracy is only down to 2.3 nautical miles, so unless you're on a boat , it's not much use :blast

Shame :(

Um, no, the SPOT is not a maritime PLB. It is more sophisticated. Your standard PLB just sends out a distress signal on an agreed frequency. Rescue services then use triangulation methods to try and find you. If you do set one off up a mountain, or in your back garden, it still raises an alert and rescue services will be called out, and be well pissed off if you were just testing it ...

The SPOT contains a GPS receiver and sends a message in its signal contacting the lat/long according to the GPS; that will be received by the SPOT people, who then contact rescue services, your elected point of contact for rescue emergencies or the embassy/consulate in the country the signal originates from.

Unlike a PLB, there is an annual subscription 99EUR fee for this service.

The European web site has a lot more information:

As someone who was contemplating PLB purchase for the boat, this looks a more flexible product and is quite keenly priced ...

I've got a SPOT. Taking it with me to Africa next year.

The only place it doesn't cover is south africa - which is a shame.
