Some years ago I got the frame of a BMW K100RS powdercoated and although it looked nice and glossy, two things happened. The surface would scratch really easily and wiping over with a cloth would result in it loosing it's shine. The centre stand got chipped and the ensuing rust then crept across the stand until the powder coating began to flake off. I'm told that this was poorly done and if done properly, it's tough as oold boots.

So as I'm about to strip my R100GS-PD down, is it to be 2-Pack or powder coating? What do you think?:nenau

Was the frame given a coat of phosphate primer before the powder?

Some restorers put 2K over powder coat .......that's bulletproof!!

Oh well, that didn't produce much of a response. Yesterday I visited B.P.Blasting in Sittingbourne who showed me a BMW frame or two, and very smart they looked. Jim Cray also uses them so that's decided then. I asked about any additional treatment but they blast clean then powdercoat.

i had mine powdercoated some ten years ago by a guy in newhaven, i remember him saying something about acid , etching? dipping? not sure which but has lasted very well considering the salt air here. steve

I took the two metal tank panels from the front of my 2012 12gs to be powder coated today. What preparation/ finishes should I ask for to ensure it won't flake off?:nenau

Two pack chassis paint, it's extremely tough, probably more so than powder coat................................and...........................YOU CAN REPAIR IT!

Just spoke to the company doing my panels, and they will use a phosphate primer, then powdercoat, then a matt laquer for extra durability.:beerjug:

You can repair powder coat. The guys I use have repair kits using the original powder and a fluid. Mix them together paint on any chips and it blends in.

Gloss powder coat always looks terrible. I use a matt finish which has a finish and shine very similar to the original finish on the BMW frames.

Look at the frame tubes where the light catches. Looks great. Modern powders are nothing like the stuff that was around 20 years ago.

I had an airhead frame and two alloy wheels powder coated by BP Blasting, never again! The frame had areas where there was next to no paint and less than a year later one of the wheels is blistering.
Admittedly they did offer to re-do the frame but after finding out they don't etch prime I took the work elsewhere, yes, the price was a bit higher but I want quality.
Cray uses BP Blasting for his 'budget' jobs, his top spec. work goes elsewhere.
Check everything carefully when you collect it!

"Cray uses BP Blasting for his 'budget' jobs, his top spec. work goes elsewhere".

That's not what Jim said to me when I spoke to him last week, but thanks for the advice. I do want a quality job and am willing to pay the extra for it. I had my alloy wheels of my Pan done by a powder coaters in Gillingham a few years ago and they are still brilliant. Unfortunately they concentrate on wheels only. I will speak to Jim again.

Happen to have inside contacts.

Had a frame sandblasted, phosphated and powder coated over 10 years ago.
Went to put bike together. Frame was banana shaped, so abandoned it.
It has been lying in my yard in the rain now over 10 years.
No trace of rust yet. Looks like it was painted yesterday.

This is Jim's reply -

"Firstly, I've never stated that I use B&P for 'Budget" jobs and top spec. work goes elsewhere.
Clearly, anyone can state anything on the internet".

There is a powder coater a couple of miles from me so I'll call in and see if they phosphate coat first.

This morning I called in at a local powder coaters in Aylesford, BIG DOG, who confirmed they zinc phosphate primer prior to powder coating and although they are much dearer than B&P, I shall go to them. Thanks for all of the advice.:)

roughly.... how much for a Frame?? £150...£200?

May get mine done and i'm local to Big Dog once a week or so.....

let me know how you get on!!

Cheers:beerjug:

B&P quoted me for £85ish for the frame but without a phosphate primer; Black Dog about £140ish with a zinc primer. A friend is visiting a Chatham powder coaters to enquire there.
