Just went out for a bit of a bimble and stopped for a fag break after 150km or so.
Checked the oil glass and was shocked to see it nearly empty...

Got some 10-40 castrol from the aprilla dealers i was at but did ask for 20-50.
Didnt notice till 1/2 liter was in...

Should I worry or will it be ok as long as the temp dont get to high... ?
Any advise is usefull.
Thanks:nenau

How long did you leave the oil to settle from turning off the engine to checking the level?

And if the bike ain't making any dodgy noises and seems to be running right....Just keep riding the thing.

Putting 10 / 40 in it, won't kill it, but if your that worried, do an oil change so you don't wake up screaming in the middle of the night with massive panic attacks;)

Obviously, using the correct oil will stop you getting a verbal dressing down from the highs & mighties on here.:augie

Did you
  • Get the bike up to "normal operating temperature" AND
  • Put it on its centre stand (on level ground) AND
  • Leave it for 5 minutes for the oil to drain back into the sump
before checking the oil level? Don't forget that the bottom of the site glass is the minimum level, but I like to keep mine near to the maximum.

My 1100 has now done 60,000 on nothing but this and it was 'quite warm' in Morocco, so I guess you'll be ok ;)

Thanks for info....
I did do the normal 5 mins check the other week,
Then noticed a thread on here about oil loss,
Book says 1ltr per 1000kms .

These things must have a habit of hiding it somewhere in the block....:hide
Anyway thanks for the replys and happy riding.

Spoke to Mike from Cardiff Motorrad on this and seems so many get the check wrong. The bike needs to be left for a couple of hours before check, he states ideal check is first thing in morning as oil cooler drips down for ages.
Dont want to go topping up too much.

I use 10-40 Castrol Semi, car oil, no problem.

The BMW Boxer will run happily on lawn mower oil.

Send a PM to Tarka he'll give you some good advice:augie
