Just 20 days till my new toy arrives but having read the posts on the hassle with the BMW top box I think I'll be cancelling that part of the order and using my Oxford tail pack! Is this a good idea? After all I'll be saving £300+ which is a few tankfuls for the bike and a few pints for me!:)

Well I for one think the BMW topbox is a good piece of kit. Mine hasn't fallen off during my road riding, which includes bunny hops over speed bumps every morning. Its big enough to take my lid when expanded and is waterproof. Looks good on the bike as well, IMHO.

Having mine fitted while it's away having some warranty work done. I think they're the same as the panniers. As long as they're fitted properly in the first place there isn't a problem. My panniers have been on the bike for over 3K miles without a problem.

GS Monkey is yours fitted to the Grabrail at the back or in place of the pillion?

I've mounted mine in place of the pillion. See this thread for details .

Personally, I think the bike is much more stable with the load on the pillion seat. I also like the security of it being there, as movement of the bike is exaggerated when its stuck out on the grabrail.

Having OEM panniers fitted Saturday.

Overall, from what I've read on this site, the OEM luggage is no good for overlanders, but if you're like me who will do most of his riding on the road, the OEM stuff is more than adequate. I'll reserve judgement on the panniers 'till i receive them.

I agree the Ali' box's are great for overlanding but for general everyday use and European touring they're too damn wide.
