20 mph enforcement from tomorrow

Just a quick reminder to our wooly back members and scouse friends, from tomorrow 17 th Dec the 20 mph limits will be subject to enforcement. Bring on the happy smiling faces when the letters start dropping through the doors in late Dec / Jan 24. I blame Brexit 🤣🤣

Do you think it'll be a problem Steve? For me I can't see anything wrong. I think on smaller urban roads on the continent it's 30kph aka 18 mph and that's never been an issue. To me, all the comments and Drakeford type memes smack a bit of hysteria and much ado about nuffink. Same thing happens up here in the Peak District....much gnashing of teeth about the almost blanket 50mph and "hundreds" of speed cameras throughout the area that has "ruined" it for bikermates, int that right JB. 😉 (The 6 statics that ruin it for me, 🙄 2 in Bakewell, 2 in Matlock/Darley Dale and 2 in Buxton are all on main roads through built up areas.) Storm in a teacup to me. 👍

The valleys? Historically. "the valleys" are in the once industrial South Wales, nowhere else even though there are other valleys all over ( work that one out 😉🤪) I assume you're not touring the Rhondda, Merthyr, Tredegar, Ebbw Vale? If so, the good luck and watch out for the Heddlu, they're right bastids down there. 😎

What causes the problem that you ask? Its not the blanket 20 mph, since that has been meddled with by local councils over the last eight weeks. On the 17th all 30’s in Flintshire bar three roads became 20 mph overnight. Since then some 20’s have been re classified as 40’s ( go figure) others have 30 in one direction and 20 in the other.

So the “ problem “ is everyone including me is confused. When the 30’s were removed , they removed all the small 30 mph repeaters. The argument was they are no longer needed as 20 mph is the default limit in a built up area. This argument further extends to some traffic calming measures being removed as in a 20 they are not needed.

So when driving in a new area ( like me today in Llandudno) if you are on a through route in a built up area it can be 20/30 or 40mph depending on the stance taken by the local council.
This isnt a smaller urban road in Europe its single and dual carriageways going through towns.

As a result folk drop their speed to 20/24 only to find as they leave the zone and see the reverse of a sign, they were in a 30 or even a 40 and doing 20mph. The road rage and flashing of lights plus wild overtaking has to be seen to be believed.

I have no problem with speed, I have a major problem with the implementation and guidance of the lowly driver. I hope this mismatch of speeds doesn’t find its way into the Peak district.

All sounds a bit of a mess. As for confusion, if it's bad for you, then it's more confusing to outsiders like myself 🙄 . Anyrode, 30 mph repeaters? You sure. Thought it was 30 default unless signed otherwise in urban areas ( speed awareness course, don't ask 🙄)
As for the Peak District or any other wide open spaces to quote the
professionals "it's game on" 😉

In the name of safety while in Wales I will be travelling at 15mph, because if 20mph is safe, 15mph must be safer. I will make sure I look in my mirrors often to revel in the queues behind me. I will endeavour whenever there are boys in blue behind me to go less than 15mph and take up as much room as possible. I mustn't forget that pedestrians now rule the road and will be stopping often just in case they need to use the road for whatever reason that they see fit.

This is exactly as I find it. Very confusing and easy to be doing the wrong speed.
 
A major part of the problem will be satnavs that display speed limits might be giving you the wrong information so if I miss spotting a sign or it’s been defaced by pissed off ‘vigilantes’ and my car doesn’t recognise it and tell me to do 20mph I pick up 3 points and a fine.

Yes, it’ll be my fault for not paying attention but it’s enough to mean I’ll only go there when I absolutely have to.

not much different to the rest of the UK & Europe which seem to have introduced 20mph/30kph limits on the quiet and Garmin is not keeping up with those either.

Rather than speed traps and speed bumps we should have the system used in many parts of Spain. As you enter a town or village there are orange flashing lights. If you go too fast between the lights then about 100m down the road a red light stays on. Go at the correct speed and the red light goes green before you get to it.

Once past the green light, the Spanish vehicle behind you overtakes

Does the person in charge of highways in Wales not drive?
 
I’m glad the road I live on has a 20mph limit, it’s a fairly narrow road that was with a lot of side roads leading into cul de sacs plus half a dozen cycleways and footpaths crossing it but I’m equally glad that the road we’re on the corner of has a 30mph limit because it’s a wider road with better visibility. We live in a modern ‘village’ that started to be built just over 20 years ago and it has a range of 20, 30 and 40mph limits depending on the circumstances of the road.

What I think is going over the top is just putting a blanket 20mph limit in all built up areas.

With the only difference that the rest of Europe doesn't have speed cameras every 20 yards, speed limits are not that strongly enforced outside built up areas and you can actually move from one place to another within the day.

Never trust your sat navs on speed limits :)

utter tosh, plenty of speed enforcement by police on rural roads in France, Germany, Austria and Switzerland, as well as compliance checks in some of them

France has cameras all over the place with "dangerous road" flashed up on the Garmin at regular intervals

Sat navs are no replacement for forward observation of road signs whether speed or direction

Yes, there is cameras abroad – what I am saying is that there is less. And traffic flows a bit smoother - not necessarily speeding. While I appreciate the UK cameras to be marked and yellow, driving in other countries mostly feels much more of a "flowing" experience*. At least I can say compared to south-east and London (I have way less experience driving up north) surroundings where a lot of people now drive at 15mph everywhere.

Not to mention less people asleep in the middle lane :D, at least in France, but that's another topic.

*and this is probably the combination of road layout, less obsession with cameras and, lastly, driving habits... that in the UK are being strongly influenced with the obsession on the speed limit, middle lane hoggers asleep at the wheel being one of the byproducts imho.

I’ve had more speeding tickets in Europe than the UK in the last 30 years :D
