20 mph enforcement from tomorrow

listen to yrselfs no wonder we are fucked.

wait till yr stuck behind some cnut doing 18 for miles, you and hundred others,
why the fuck do you ride bikes exactly.

is this an actual thing or just a reactionary thought in your bitter brain?

I live in Wales and spend very little time at 20mph. My exit road to the main A483 has about half a mile of 20mph then a section where the road is 30mph most of the day, except when it is dropped to 20mph when the two schools along there are starting or ending their day. Most of the villages along that road towards Crossgates are 40mph so remain unaffected.

You reactionary types need to get a grip.

ahh you live in the sticks, rural bliss,i know the area very well, i was up the 483 Friday gone to welshpool, your driving is totally different to what the city dwellers along the M4 corridor etc and have to endure, the worse thing that happens up there is the likes of us using your manor as a racetrack with the resultant 50mph nsl's, comfortably numb.

Please let us know where you can find a 20mph limit which stretches for "miles".

I have driven and ridden across Wales from East to West and from South to North, adhering to the limits, since the 20mph limit came in and any difference in journey times attributable to the new limits is negligible.

There are short sections of 20 in small towns and villages that are no hindrance at all in the overall scheme of things.

Where there are larger built up areas subject to 20mph, such as here in Cardiff, there are plenty of idiots complaining that 20mph causes "congestion", as if congestion had nothing to do with the fact that there are simply too many motorists trying to drive into a limited space with limited parking availability.

In any event, very few appear to be adhering to the 20 limit, most are still bombing around at 40+ along residential roads just as they did when the limit was 30. This enables them to get to the next set of red lights faster than if they stuck to 20. I have seen no evidence of enforcement except where there happens to be a working speed camera, of which there are very few and people know where they are so they just slow down temporarily.

I had hoped that it was just "motorists" who become law-breaking selfish sociopaths when they incarcerate themselves in their tin boxes and cut themselves off from humanity - shouldn't we bikers be setting an example?

This . 👍

I’m glad the road I live on has a 20mph limit, it’s a fairly narrow road that was with a lot of side roads leading into cul de sacs plus half a dozen cycleways and footpaths crossing it but I’m equally glad that the road we’re on the corner of has a 30mph limit because it’s a wider road with better visibility. We live in a modern ‘village’ that started to be built just over 20 years ago and it has a range of 20, 30 and 40mph limits depending on the circumstances of the road.

What I think is going over the top is just putting a blanket 20mph limit in all built up areas.
I live on a road with 20 mph limit ,
98% of drivers ignore it. I have never seen any kind of enforcement ie. Police man

We’ve got the joys of numerous curves in the road accompanied by narrowing and slightly raised sections that while not exactly sleeping policemen will give a car a thump if you hit them at over 20mph.

I’d guess most people go up and down the road at between 20-25mph whereas if it was a 30 limit that would up it to 30-35mph.

The biggest problem is people reversing out of their drives in winter when their windows are iced up because not only can they not see what’s coming but cars going up and down the road have mainly come out of the cul de sacs and their windscreens are either misted or only have a tiny hole scraped clear so they can’t see anything either.

example?
First one I can think of , three miles from where I live 1.1 miles all an A road , and 80% downhill. This is a favourite for GoSafe vans when it was a 30 mph. Im sure I can find some longer stretches too

I thought about typing such a response, especially the bit about racing to the next red light, but I thought the target audience would be too dense or entrenched in their dog whistle reactionary opinions that it would be pointless

that's stretching the notion of "miles" a lot and will take an extra minute of your life to traverse, assuming nobody is turning right, making a delivery, driving their goats etc.

Point taken Wessie , but all the press is about , “outside schools / hospitals “ to gain traction. Show me either on this. The nearest school is half a mile away. This is an A road with side roads feeding estates.

I looked at Streetview and noticed a school sign. Can't see a school on the road but there is a school crossing patrol shown in this image https://maps.app.goo.gl/8i9C679Yk2WpTRgW9 Seems there are two schools up Crosstree Lane so a lot of kids on foot and no doubt many 4x4 dropping off kids using that junction.

If your local authority had any sense they would do like Powys here in Welshpool. Salop Road has two schools up side roads similar to this situation, just as you come off the bypass. We have matrix signs that drop the speed to 20 for the school traffic. The rest of the day, the road is at 30mph until you get closer to town. You need to bang onto your councillors to have some sense.

I forgot to add "impatient" to my list of pejorative descriptors :D

I detect a lot of anger and aggression in remarks about speed limits - just the emotions you don't really need when driving a potentially lethal machine on public roads.

Take the example of "stuck behind some cnut doing 18mph" - assuming that this is in a 20 mph zone, then you're not really "stuck" are you? You're moving along at a speed just below the limit, and for all you know the "cnut" may have a black box in their car mandated by their insurance company. If you haven't allowed enough time for your journey then that's your problem, not theirs.

Maybe those who get their knickers in a twist about this should take some time to reflect on their attitudes over the holidays. Use of the roads is not some god-given right, it's a privilege you have been granted by earning a licence - if you don't respect your side of the contract by obeying the law and respecting other road users what does that say about you?

Ashley Neal and London Dash Cam videos on You Tube are a recommended alternative to rubbish Christmas TV .....

I wouldn’t be upset if EVERY city, town and village had an enforced 20mph limit. Those who care about others and respect their community will ride/drive safely and responsibly.
Others who put themselves first won’t. Maybe safety cameras will help them see the error of their ways.

Which doesn’t mean driving at stupidly low speeds when there no need. There will be absolutely no reduction in accidents by lowering speed limits.

Pious twat.

A 10mph reduction in your ferocious speedy travel must be awful for you.
You think a nationwide 20mph limit won’t visit your village of choice?
Ha :)

No need to insult.
And as for ‘no reduction in accidents’, really?

I’m a bit fed up of nonsense like this, but I apologise for the insult.

Realistically, for there to be a reduction in accidents as a result of the 20mph limit, there must have been accidents happening at between 20-30mph in zones that were 30mph. I honestly doubt there are many of those. It’s nothing to do with safety, and everything to do with personal ideologies of the elected representatives who use our money to make our lives worse.

Personally, I’ve managed to avoid crashing wholesale into pedestrians my entire life, and it wasn’t hard. Maybe better driver training should be implemented before more stupid virtue signalling restrictions

And since the biggest cause of death in males under 50 is suicide, I’d rather that was investigated. It’s probably because somebody is trying to stop them doing anything they like.
