2001 1150 gs wont shift up past 1rst gear

I'll tell you what - check the gearlever pivot, as suggested previously and see if that cures the problem before starting to diagnose or start to complicate things that may not need complicating.

Otherwise all the doom and gloom merchants (that have no actual experience in real life) will be along posting what they've read somewhere else on the internet and that you need a new gearbox/clutch/slave cylinder etc etc.

Even if you are just doing a bit of maintenance on your bike this is a simple task to do. I did what St Eptoe advised and the whole thing moves a lot freer than before.
