Another of my deceased mates vehicles.
2002, 9 seat station wagon. 128K miles. Completely standard but a bit tatty. It was parked up with the other vehicles in the workshop about 5 years ago after failing it's MOT and has been sat there untouched until now. I'm not going to go into full details in the thread, I can go through that with genuinely interested parties but the basic story with the vehicle is:
Mick loved Landrovers, He ran them as both work and personal vehicles. He would buy a newish defender and run it personally for 4 or 5 years then it would go into the business as a works vehicle.
Following the purchase of his grey 110XS in 2014, thats what happened to this vehicle. He owned it from 2 years old as his personal vehicle then replaced it with the grey puma and it became a crew bus for moving crane drivers and riggers around Teesside.
It's never been off-road, it was mechanically well looked after but it's had bodies in overalls climbing in and out of it for 5 years ish so the cloth interior is grubby.
The body work is I would say average for a 23 year old defender. It's a long way from mint but it's not a farm hack shed either. The bulkhead is pretty solid.
The good: Genuine CSW with low miles.
The chassis is solid, it's never been waxoyled so what you see is what you get. It wants a good clean up to remove the surface rust and then treating. The chassis outriggers are solid, the bolt on rear tub mounts are tatty.
Its been fully serviced and had the fuel tank fully drained and cleaned.
It's had a new battery.
The ECu has been checked and declared fine by ECU testing services who recon TD% ECU's
It has had the injector wiring harness replaced as there was oil leaking past the seal.
It's had new front callipers, rear callipers overhauled, new discs and pads all round and all pipes have been replaced with copper. It stops like it should!
Mick had a caravan when he bought this so its wired for caravan electrics.
When it went into the business it had an Erberspacher D2 diesel heater fitted to keep bodies warm when sitting on site. It works but I think there may be an air leak on the fuel line between the tank and pump as after it's been stood for a couple of days it needs priming again. I have got the replacement section of hose but it's yet to be fitted.
It will have 12 months MOT once I get the rear shock bushes changed next week (it failed on them plus number plate lamp not working).
The Bad:
The Auxy drive belt (probably the tensioner or idler pulley) has started squeeling on the way to the MOT station. I've got a new belt and pulley on order which will go with the vehicle.
The central locking can be a bit hit and miss. I suspect the Lucas control unit may benefit from being sent away for repair as it's comms with the main ecu is intermittent.
The fuel pump is a bit noisy at times. Not sure of this if this is a sign it's on it's way out or just running itself back in after being stood for so long. Time will tell! There is however an inspection cover in the rear floor to allow easy access to the pump which was removed and cleaned and a new retaining ring fitted so swapping will be straightforward if required.
Bonus:
There are a set of 5 genuine deep dish XS wheels to go with it which fill the arches better than the narrower boost alloys.
There is a winch and winch bumper which were removed from the Grey Puma which will go with it.
In summary it's a either a cheap 110 for someone to bat around in 'as is'. A solid starting point for a refurb project or a decent candidate for a camper conversion.
