2004 fuel gauge

Ok Guys a quick one, does the standard 2004 1200gs have the same fuel strip issues as the later 2010 and GSA models. the gauge on mines shows full for ages and then falls off very quickly. what should i be expecting from a tank full in miles..

What I do on my '06 is brim the tank,reset the trip and expect to fill up at 200 miles or just before. There are lots of posts on here if you do a search.

I fitted a new fpc when I had my 05 GS the gauge only registered half full,after woods it then worked perfectly so could be an old fpc ? or dirty contacts

Ok guys fpc thats a new one and where is this? i love these bikes nothing lasts a week without a breakdown thats what bikes are about lol. seems the meter showing full all the time now with no movement so i have adopted the re-set the miles thing with every tank full, not ideal but along with the dodgy gear indicator i should not expect any more. to many gadgets that where never perfected after about 20 years.

No it doesn't, my 2010 30yr anniversary GSA is a strip.
Doesn't mean all 2010 are the same though, think a change was made later in 2010.
Did the early gauges not used to drop to half a tank in one fell swoop and then gradually for the second half?

Fpc located behind left side panel top of tank a round grilled cover (simply pulls off) on top,you'll see wires going into it area is usually filthy unless kept clean do this 1st before removing anything I used a Hoover cos of the small bits of crud.

Oh you moan about gear indicator another bit that wears out,you have got an old 2004 bike don't expect it to be problem free next up it'll be ........

Not a moan this is my fourth BM and they all have same issues don't mean i don't like the bikes, just glutton for punishment plus a bike tinkerers dream. but this forum is full of very useful info that either sorts or fecks up completely these exact issues.. wouldn't change for anything..

Update!! stripped connections from top of tank on LHS and as advised lots of crud. cleaned re- sealed and all seems good again. was the plastic cover that sat on top fitted to all models because mines don't have one...

Yes there should be a cover but water can still get in & sit on the top of fpc common fault

The cover was only fitted to the GS models, GSA never had one.

Getting back to OP original subject.
My 05 gauge behaved the same: full untill about 105 miles then drops to half and from there, slowly drops to empty as the miles go by - always considered this normal behaviour (had bike from 2k miles) - in fact, I dont recall there being graduations in the top half of the gauge, just a single 'block ' of black LCD

Blasting 180 miles. touring 225-240 miles

Mine went in for rear disc flange recall while in they did the fuel pump too, my fuel gauge hasn't worked properly since.

Its been back three times twice for recalibration with exactly the same symptoms as ianmc64 fuel level dropping off fast. took it back this week and they have fitted a new strip, still not convinced its fixed the fuel gauge was showing empty I filled the tank to the brim, it took 21 litres I have a GSA 33litre tank.

Will run it empty see what mileage but I get.

I am beginning to think they have calibrated it for a standard GS. Any one know how the calibration is done I wouldn't mind having a go at it myself???

I'm planning to get a fuel carrier. Much cheaper than a new gauge and the easiest way to get a reserve fuel supply.
Rotopax are cool but the 1 gallon (US) is a bit large.

I just wait until it drops after around 100miles, one quick question is the fuel light separate or does it just come on when the needle hits a certain level. one other is there an attachment for the vario cases to carry extra fuel..

Ive measured up. The Rotopax 3.8 litre fuel carrier is a bit too big for the Adv side case frame. A Givi 2.5 litre fuel can should do the job.
