1st off sorry if this is posted in the wrong bit.

Right then I have a 2004 R1200GS with 170,000 miles on it.
Recently the abs warning light would come on and you would hear no pump noise when the back brake was pressed (front works fine) it would then sometimes sort itself out. When working, if I held the rear peddle down for longer than 10 seconds the pump would stay on until I switched off the ignition but now its not working at all and the abs warning light is always on (with no pump noise at all)

I have been to BMW and thy said (without even plugging it in) I would need a new ABS modual at £1700. So I said I will get one 2nd hand but they said it wont work as each one is for each individual bike, I smell BS but still

Any ideas?

Thanks
Will

i may be wrong mate ,but i am sure sure there is someone repairing them now, someone will be along shortly to tell you who soon :thumb

I believe you can take them apart and clean them. It's something to do with teh brushes sticking I think. We were talking about this the other night so I'll see if I can get some more details but apparently it can be done quite easily.

Thank god I don't have bloody ABS.....

I believe (but could be wrong) it is Steve Grover who advertises on here as 'MotoScot'

I fear you may be misinformed, the best Steve could offer was sending my unit to a uncommunicative German company who charge around £800 up front, and take an age to do the job, on balance he wasn't keen to repeat the process.

I have bought a secondhand unit but it didn't fit , so the search continues for me as well.

On a 170 k bike ,just remove it!
The unit is programmed to the bike!
A s/h unit could be fitted but would again need reprogramming,so you are into a significant spend possibly to find the s/h unit is buggered, let's face it, the bike will not loose value cos the abs is no longer fitted

It's easy to clean up and put back. Taking it out and taking the outer case off the unit is the hard part. It's effectively a sealed unit BUT if you know exactly where to drill out the tabs that hold the outer case to the inner unit then you can fix it yourself.

I know this not from personal experience, haven't done it, but one of my bets buddies has. He bought a pillar drill . He has posted some vids up on YouTube to help show how it's done. He's better at fixing things than he is at being a "you tuber" though :thumb

Got my wires crossed somewhere, as I said I wasn't totally certain! :blast

The best thing to do is a servoectomy. This makes the bike a non ABS bike. It's the best solution. JJH

You're right, you don't know this from personal experience because you're talking about the later post 2008 ABS system - the poster has the early servo/abs system, completely different kettle of fish. :D It could be that it's fixable but you'll need to have the fault codes read by someone with a GS911 - it could be something as simple as an internal filter blocked or the pressure relief valve stuck - I have boxes of spare servo parts and have managed to repair about 50% recently.

Now that's why you shouldn't believe all that you read on the Internet:blast

His was , just as you said oh wise one, on a 58 plate. :D:D

Thanks everyone for for the replys, I really appreciate it.

I saw thinking befour posting this thread of just doing away with the abs and just fitting normal brakes. My issue is, does it mess up the computer and is there a way of getting the abs warning light to turn off? I ask as it won't pass it's next mot with the abs light on.

Also if I do do that I'll strip the abs unit down (maybe with a big hammor :P ) and see if I can find the issue.
I'm amazed each unit has to be programmed to each bike (this is why i love my 3 older f650gs, less to go wrong). I again guess it's just yet another way for BMW to screw money out of peole.

No bulbs on a 1200 .... it has an Led circuit board :D

But there are ways and means ;)

Unless they road test the bike the abs light would never go out anyway. A scalpel would soon disable the LED anyway.

you could just put it on a courier and send it to steptoe, then once he has fixed it get him to use it for a few days to make sure all is ok ,then get it couriered back home to scotland .probs about 300 quid for both ways with the courier.:thumb

I'm near Dumfries and have a GS911 if you'd like the fault codes read / reset.
