Hello, I have never owned a BMW Bike before (Have had plentry of their Cars), and I have just bought a 2004 R1200GS with 40,000 Miles, with a full service history. the bike was last serviced at 35,000 approx.

Issue 1: When I accelerate the bike after starting it rocks from left to right with more movement toward the right side. Is this normal?

Issue 2: When bringing the bike home from buying it I over took into some roadmarking/hatching approx 30/40mph, and the bike went into a serious speed woble, and I was inch's from falling off. I would have thought a off road capable bike would have performed better than that. Any suggestions.

Issue 3: The engine seems rough when ideling, but is smooth upto 4/5k RPM, and has difficulty/strains to accelerate beyond and into 5-7k RPM. Any ideas as to what is going on.

Issue 4: it is very hard on petrol, I have had several big bikes Hayabusa, R1, none of these were as hard on juice (and I rode them hard).

I am hoping there is some common issue between issues 1, 3 and 4.

Thanks for any help /advice given

Mine is rough at idle (compared to my 1100) I'm pretty sure its due to the idle actuators, and not a fault, so theres not much you can do about it. The fuel isue, ??? dunno, mines better than the 11 but they are known to be juicy. The handling is good on mine, but as my tyres are getting worn the bike does seem to like going over paint etc less and less. As soon as I can justifiably call my shit Dunlops worn out, I'll get some Tourances on it. I find the Dunlops great in the dry but scary in the wet, hope it's not the bikes power delivery.....?

#1 sounds like torque reaction from the engine. It is less noticeable on the 1200 than earlier boxers because of the counterbalance arrangement. They all do it, and is more obvious when the bike is revved when stationary.

#2 could be tyre pressures/tyre wear.

#3 and 4 might be linked, and might be connected with the 5k since last service. Or #3 could just be the difference between an in-line 4 and boxer engine experience. Re #4, I find the 1200GS to be alot more economical than my last bike (RSVR Mille) and even more than its predecessor (VFR800 FiX)

1 The rock is normal for a flat twin

2 That behaviour is most unusual for a GS,even with well worn tyres. Get it checked out. As a matter of urgency check for play in rear wheel and Fork pinch bolts

3 Since last service was 5000miles back you may well need the Throttle Bodies balanced. This makes a huge difference to BM twins. Upper reaches of the Rev range need two bites of the throttle i.e.when throttle open re-cock wrist and open again. Some people never learn this;)

4 Fuel consumption varies rider to ride.Quite possible to get 47+MPG and to see low 20's when used really hard. Enjoy it.Hope this helps.
