Hopefully, someone will know an outfit that can ID the ECU and code a key...

There was an outfit near Wrexsham that could do it, but they seem to have folded...

Can the combined wit and wisedom of the forum find the solution...? :-)

If Valhalla is anywhere near Southampton, you could try contacting Alan Meade at Autotechnix and ask if he could help. He's the only guy I know with the kit and the brains to do this stuff.

buy "a theft kit" from james sherlock - they seem happy to aid vehicle theft of ALL BMW models, doing all the locks and ECU secondhand all day long for peanuts

should be illegal and they should also have the morals to know better !

Thanks, Fellas!

Usually Motorworks record the VIN of the original and send a Key with the replacement if it did not have a key then you should call them !

Unless you are just looking a second Key coded?

Any reputable automotive locksmith or parts dealer should ask to see a copy of your V5C along with proof of your address before enabling any 'disabled' vehicle.

The best known ECU repair/ key cutter on this side won’t touch a BMW bike ECU for fear of “bricking” it.

I’m at a loss to fully understand what is going on here.
Maybe the OP could explain.

But from what I can gather from thread description. The OP has purchased the engine ECU together with the coded key from Motorworks. He has replaced the ignition lock wafers so the replacement coded key will now fit and work.

So as Dr Farkoff eludes to, the OP is on a quest for a second key. :nenau

My question is, I thought BMW provided a replacement key service ?:nenau

A simple google search brought up these people in London, nor far from Valhalla. :augie

the way I read that first post

he has a random ECU and needs an expert to work out how to get at it, or the key, so he can programme the ecu to a known key and or programme a suitable key so that the ECU recognises it

neither operation impossible - but def not the std way to go about it - it would likely be simpler and very likely quicker (and also likely to be cheaper) to just buy a theft kit - as I said in post #3

virginising a used ECU is doable using old BM dealer tools - a std key is I guess non programmable (with normal tools) - usually the factory create the key and programme the bike - the difficulty with a theft kit will come in obtaining another £40 key from a dealership - as the ECU and keys originally come from a different VIN bike so BMW can't help !!!

that said most ignition keys from timpson are fakes - just copying the chip inside the main key - not adding a third to the vehicle's brain like you'd want - but I guess BM bikes don't use this unique key methodology as you order another and it just works without needing to link it to the vehicle's brain...

He said he got the ECU from Motorworks.

Motorworks only sell Used ECU’s with the coded key.

Also why would he replace the lock toggles on the ignition key barrel if he didn’t need to. So he’s done this for the coded key he got from Motorworks with the ECU.

My guess is he wants a coded spare key.

:nenau

the bike might have been got at by hoddies and he got some bits to repair on the cheap

I have no idea what spares motorworks might sell - I'm sure if you asked and paid less they sell anything to anyone for bits that are no use for normal users

Thanks boys, I will try these guys...

The independent who fitted the ECU and altered the toggles in the lock is at a loss as to sourcing a second key, we'll see.

I spoke to James Sherlock, he has retired now, he was not able to offer a solution other than a main dealer: Jefferies who are now bought out by Vertu.

I will post the result.

P.S. Yes, I want a spare key....

Q To them.
"I have had the bike from new, it has had an unknown source secondhand ECU fitted by an independent and the key toggles altered to fit my locks.

I want to source a spare key".

A "Hello Geoff, if you have one working key and just need spare one it will be £85 per key if you come to us with the bike to London.

Let me know if you would like to go ahead.

Best regards

Lukas"

I was told it could not be done... I went to Cotswold Mortorad who failed...

Well done Boys!

BMW dealers have an official way to get a real BMW key cut to perfection with a genuine BMW chip set up to match the ECU on the bike they sold... that's it simple reliable 100% legit, and looks and works like the original - takes 2 days and £50 so long as you go to a main dealer with the v5 in your name and an address u can prove - of if they know u and service the bike they just order one...

there is no other way for a legit dealer to do it with a non std ECU (outside ordering an ignition key and an ECU and playing in programming at silly prices)

of course any scum with a machine to cut that style can cut a Chinese fake they got for 2 quid per blank and copy info using some hooky tools and sell it to you for 60 quid - it might last for a while and it will start the bike - although turning it might be more tricky than a nice original

you could have asked the correct question in the first place....

Lukas, who runs Motorcycle Keys is a gent, he sorted it. BMW were no help whatsoever, the bike would be an ecomonic right off had I lost the key listening to them.

Thank you to all contributors.. :clap
