2007 r1200 gs fuel range

Hi, new 1200 owner here.

I'm still getting used to my new bike and I'm wondering your opinions.

The fuel warning light came on at 135 miles saying it had thirty five miles range. I fill up but only managed to put in 14.5 litres. The tank holds 20L.

Is the fuel indication a bit like my old 1150? In the sense that it's purely notional? 5.5 L in the tank should surely deliver about60 miles?

Any tips and suggestions appreciated.

200 miles on my 2006 gs normally. (I don't ride it hard) fuel gauge shows full until about 130 mls, then drops to a third. Actual light on around 160

I could be wrong here but


The range calculates and estimates based on previous usage or at least it seemed to on mine so if you have been giving it a proper spanking on one tankful but then ride "sensibly" on the next the range will be calculated on the spanking tank

other than that you should be able to get about 200 miles per tank

Assume its doing 10 miles to the litre and (unless you thrash everywhere) it wont be far away. Don't trust the fuel strip or the trip computer countdown.

You can get more fuel in the tank more easily by removing the rubber collar thing that sits at the bottom of the metal filler neck. It extends downwards an inch or so and inhibits the escape of air (hence the ingress of fuel) once the fuel level reaches it. You can make a further improvement to range/fuel capacity by drilling the filler neck about 10mm below the flange - that allows you to put fuel in what was intended to be the expansion space. But use it only if you're riding the bike immediately after filling up - not if you're going to leave the bike sitting in the sun, otherwise it'll spew fuel out of the overflow/vent.

Since doing the above I've got a safe 220 mile range before filling up (with 10-15 miles range remaining reported) and that's commuting into London so not the most economical riding (averaging a reported 52mpg) - will almost certainly get worse once the school holidays are over, though, and traffic returns to normal

I have 2009 gs. Don't know if its relevant. Very similar symptoms. Took it back to dealer and they changed a fuel sensor. Rode from full tank to empty to check it went 235 miles.
So fuel light comes on with 50 to go on gauge then does 30 odd miles after 0 and stops.

I think I'll stick a full gerry can in the top box and figure it out the old fashioned way!

No don't do that Just set the trip every fill and fill at 180 rather than running to empty !! If its empty the pump won;t get cooled (I doubt canbus turns it off or we'd have a helluva lot more stopped bikes that are more than half full with the Dodgy fuel strip jobby!

I think I'll stick a full gerry can in the top box and figure it out the old fashioned way!

No don't do that Just set the trip every fill and fill at 180 rather than running to empty !! If its empty the pump won;t get cooled (I doubt canbus turns it off or we'd have a helluva lot more stopped bikes that are more than half full with the Dodgy fuel strip jobby!

Sounds like it's a different beast to my old rides!

Crumbs - I seem to be filling mine (2006 gs) up after about 130 miles or so! That's based on the fuel gauge looking like it's got nothing left....will i get a fuel warning light if i push it? Does the standard of not showing any fuel used for the first 100 miles, then abruptly drops off.....

You'll get a warning light when there's about 40 or so miles range left. Sounds as if you're filling up too early!

Yeah does doesn't it! What capacity are these tanks then? I do like to "make progress" when I'm on the lanes, but you'd think sitting on the M25/M4 would give me reasonable fuel consumption.
I'll see how long my nerve lasts next time I'm out....probably end up ringing the missus to get some petrol....unless I go out with a top box with a petrol can in!

Ha - just reading up the thread and doing some quick calcs - I'm filling up way too early!

I had a 12gs in 05/06 and on a long run was getting 250 miles. I always ran the tank down to almost empty. JJH

Sadly not looked at litres - tends to be between £11-£14 I'm putting in...which must be what, 12-15 litres max??
Right - next ride I'm going wait for the light!

It does not really matter when you fill up! Your not doing it wrong!
