2008 12gs heated grips - not so hot!

Why are my heated grips so rubbish?
My 2008 12gs grips don't perform so well, On full heat they are only half as warm as my previous GS (06) and my wife's 800GS are twice as hot!
I have asked the dealer twice to check them at service times but they are still rubbish!
Is it just the year the bike was made or is it faulty grips, i did hear somewhere that it might be alloy handlebars? - please share your knowledge as I'm scratching my head and it's going to get cold soon!

I traded in an 08 this year and the grips were toastie hot from new and never changed. I think you have a fault.

The grips do have a tendency to go hr if yours are on the hr side then they won't heat up well

Mine are tepid or warm. They have never been hot.
Sorry to ask but what does "to go hr" mean?

My grips on an '08 GSA are also luke warm to warm - would never describe them as hot at any point and that's before I fitted Grip Puppies. I have replaced one of them as the element went and that's exactly the same as well so I'm putting this down to design rather than a fault as such. As I suffer with cold fingers at the best of times, I use heated gloves as the main solution in winter and have the heated grips on for a little added extra.

My '08 GSA grips tend to cycle on and off to give an average heat, with thin gloves you can feel this happening. Perhaps the ecu monitors the resistance of the grip circuit and varies the output to the grips accordingly? If so, it could be down to an ecu setting or a difference in resistance.

Mines an 08. Maybe they are made to not heat very well. I wonder if the ECU can be adjusted (via GS-911) to give more current.

Sorry to buck the trend, I've had an '08 from new and they've been fine. Gloves do make a difference tho'. The grips are hot on ** with lightweight Wolf-type scrambling gloves and reasonable with my thick winter tourers. The guards do a good job of keeping the wind off, without them I doubt the winter experience would be quite so pleasant.

+1 for Pukmeisters comment about cycling the output. I've noticed it on long journeys to.

No suggestions re improvement, tho'.

I'm glad to hear that others also have this issue. I hav had an R850R, R1150RT and two R1200RTs (05&08) where the output is mediocre to say the least

On all these bikes however I have noticed that if you quickly close the throttle while leaving the bike in gear heat instantly floods into the grips - and not just the grips but heated gloves and my d.i.y heated seat pad as well - but not my jacket that is powered directly from the battery

What could all this be about?

Can't remeber if it is the GS or my previous Sprint, but I seem to remeber reading somewhere that if you start the bike with the grips switched on they operate at a lower temperature.
