Just discovered a small bit of play in the final drive when rocking the back wheel with my hands. I am thinking of doing a Morocco trip in middle of September, so not that far away time wise. Probably be 2.5 -3.5 K miles for the trip. If it would last no problem then I could get it repaired over the winter at my leisure.

What is the rate of progression on this failure and what's the considered opinion? And on Morocco guided tour.... safe? Thanks.

Where is the play ? in the final drive unit or the final drive pivot bearing ?

Have you drained the final drive oil ? what does it look like ?

mine has always had massive backlash slop (wheel rotation), I thought it got much worse around 20k (roundabout when BM swapped the hub) but another 10k on, it makes the same noises on the stand if running in gear (like you'd think the world was ending) and none at all whilst riding.

I saw on a schematic there are different shims allowing the pinion to be closer or further out of mesh, but no bm dealer wants to know... and another reputable bike shop thought with a hypoid bevel best left well alone

are we saying this Mikey chap would sort it properly?

If you're talking about this then it's normal, I know this is a different model but the 1200 won't be much different.
The chaps above are talking about side to side movement of the wheel .

yes, thanks for the reply :-) mine was like that got more later on, only realised this year the change was directly after BM did the hub recall.

As others have said, I would drain the FD oil and check for bits...if clear then crack on. If not get Mikeyboy to recondition before you go.

Thanks for the replies, will drain the oil and have a look. The play is detected when I rock the wheel with 2 hands at say 11 and 5 or so .....didn't use to be there.... bike had a bit of a hard time on a recent trip two up on rocky terrain at the Stella Alpina.

I'm not going to use it for Morocco so panic off, will report back on the findings when I get round to it. Interested to hear the anatomy of a complete failure.... what folk noticed and timeline. I'm not averse to putting things on the long finger :D

For A week or so with Mikey & the appropriate beer tokens, its a small price to pay,

I believe the failure of the needle roller bearing is undoubtably terminal & catastrophic

My 2011 GS was the same a month after I bought it in 2016. The dealer pointed it out at service and had it back under warranty for new crown bearing. (and even scratched the hub for free whilst carrying out the work) It made very slight difference to the play, but it really was minimal, and another 6 months and 8000 miles later it was back to exactly how it was before the new bearing and has been like that ever since, and now has 41000 on it. I've done the final drive oil changes and never seen any noticeable metallic contamination.

On my 08 ABS bike the flange-side crown wheel bearing is on the outside of the oil seal so it is hard for the bearing to contaminate the oil. In my case when the bearing did start to die the oil was as normal
