Just dropped off 2008 GSA at NOG for 18k / 2 year service before warranty expires. By the time I'd arrived at work on courtesy bike circa 45 minutes later, several missed calls to tell me:-

1) Front disks are pretty much on the minimum thickness, pads likewise, cost of circa £529 to replace both. :blast

2) Rear axel is buggered, too much play/wear, needs replacing at circa £800 plus  - thankfully under warranty! :clap

Then there is still the service cost and new tyres to factor in, so not looking forward to the final invoice later today... :tears

Based on the experience of the wider community, is the above scenario "normal"? I don't think I ride it particularly hard or typically brake hard and late, but I guess there is a lot of metal to stop...

Have you had the pads changed before? If not, I'd find it a bit odd that my pads wore out at the same rate as the discs and want to know why!

I don't claim that my experience is the norm, but mine's a '57 plate GSA with 25,000 miles. Original discs, original pads, original rear axle. Only thing I've had replaced under warranty was the battery.

*Touches wood!*

New front pads AND discs at 18k would seem to be excessive wear. I've got a 54 plate 1200, 38k miles and its still on the original front discs. I can't remember changing the front pads either, although I've fitted at least 4 sets of rear pads. For some reason, rear pads wear out in 8-10k miles even though I hardly ever use the back brake by itself.

'08 GSA 24,000 miles service and front pads changed as well as brake fluid etc. £429.

In approx. 70,000 miles of GS/GSA ownership. I have never experienced worn disks.
Shagged front disks after only 18k miles is not right, and may be due to excessive ‘pad drag’:mmmm, so should IMHO merit a claim under warranty.

+1 except I'm still on original rear pads as well(and a non servo bike and 5k less miles, so perhaps a +¾) :thumb2

Perhaps if you want good mileage on your disks/pads you need to move to Woking :D

Interesting, the front and rear pads were changed at the previous service - at circa 11-12k miles.

Thanks for everyone's feedback, I'm not convinced the disks should have needed replacing so early either, but I also have no means of proving any real fault or liability to insist on the warranty claim. That said, nothing ventured and all that...

Challenge them regarding this and mention the pad change 12k,also mention that you've never owned a vehicle that required new discs at 18k,ask what the thickness of "old" disc is, and find out what the safe wear limit or thickness is (someone will be along with that shortly I suspect......) if they insist they needed changing ask to see the old parts, don't give up without a fight :D

Just my 2p's worth.......but it would be interesting as to what BMW would regard as the 'normal' life-span of a front disc......I would be asking the dealer for a start.....and I'd think it would be expected to last way longer than 18k!

Maybe I'm being optimistic....but I would have thought it would be more like the life of the bike, or as near as?( within reason) :nenau

I may be well wide of the mark...but apart from for warping I've never had a disc replaced.

A couple of sets of pads to one disc is what seems to be about normal wear on a car equates to about 60 k so 18 k seem a little premature for discs at least

I asked the question on pick up - the dealer answer is that the expected front brake disk replacement time for a GSA is from circa 16k to 24k miles. go figure....and use more engine braking

I've done 14k on mine....and are as new :nenau

flicking through my service history, can't see discs being changed. (56 plate GS, 30k miles)

@ Ragnar how did you blag a battery on warranty, i thought it was not covered?

Their version of worn and the normal version of worn are 2 entirely different things!!

52k on mine and had a new set of front pads at 36k. Still loads of life in them and I'm hard on the front. Rear disc worn to the limit and change with new rear pads fitted this week by myself:D

Sometimes there is no great rhyme nor reason for it.

A friend's SP1 warped its front discs in about 12,000 miles. Another warped just one disc on, I think, an 08 FireBlade in about 7,000.

The pads and discs on my Blackbird seemed to go on forever. That too had a (cruder) linked brake system, running bog standard Honda brake parts. The rear disk on my 1200GSA wore at about 23,000, the replacement disc (bog standard BuMW) seems to be fine after another 22,000.

Sgt Bilco

Took the rear break apart last weekend to change a very rusty pin and spring (Vines supplied new under warranty) and as its not particularly hard (even for a man of my very limited mechanical ability) I will change break pads when the time comes myself.

Whereabouts did you buy the break pads?
