I agree entirely with those sort of numbers, but when you are one of the "less than 1%" and you've paid a premium price for what is supposed to be a premium product, you do have a right to be a little upset.

I'm in a similar position with the K12GT, there have been some (very few) failures of shaft drives, but our major problem is ECU's and airbox issues.

I think if I had a major component failure in 180 miles after spending £14K I'd be quite a bit upset, warranty or not.

A "less than 1%" failure of some minor electrical component would be probably considered acceptable but not a major mechanical component.

What would be the outcry if our BMW 3 Series drivers had a "less than 1%" failure of rear axles .......?

Have you looked on BMWLAND recently .. Look at the way 3 series 320 turbo's are failing ..

1 % FAILURE...............Absolutely olloks........and you know it!!!
Every and I repeat every single Gs with reasonable and sometimes low mileage will at sometime suffer from one of these perished seals causing oil leaks.
Dont bullshit the guy, tell him the truth!

There we go ................. I just knew he wouldn't disappoint. :aidan

PS. There's a thread in praise of the GS that is blemish free at moment. It's high time you paid a visit and expressed your balanced viewpoint, gained by your bitter experiences with BMW....ie. NO faults on YOUR bike.:augie

I've lurked around here for a while to get some idea about GS's as I fancy one as a solo bike (06 K1200GT-SE is main bike for me and SWMBO).
Read all the disaster stories about the first batches of GS12's shaft problems and thought that was a done deal and sorted. Now brand spanking new 08 bikes are having shaft problems?
I know bad news spreads faster than good, but FFS!
Do the other makes (Pan, FJR, GTR, Guzzi, etc) with shaft drives have the same problems? I've not heard any personally.

Red 1, this is the first forum I've really got into, and that was after buying a GS (06 model bought new is 07), only problem I've had is a new battery fitted under warranty, frankly that also should not happen. But in BMW's strive for wieght loss the battery on the 12 got smaller.

I think you have to take several things into account with the 12 and this forum... firstly most 12 riders tend to be a little older than your average rocket rider, we are mature in our ways, we are mostly (on this site) brits, we have paid what we consider to be serious money for our ride, we consider the BMW badge to be beyong the perals of everyday mechnical gremlims... and the fact that we generally do actually ride the bikes regularly and to high mileages.. all added up we are generally prone to be moaning old farts.

Also take into account there are a lot of GS's out there. So I think if you look at any other dedicated bike site you will find a lot of gripes also. It the nature of the beast, like you say bad news travels fast.

Take our dear friend "TEKKY" as an example he will pour gas on any fire burning on this site but also has said recently that the GS is a great bike and will bring much fun to a new 08 owner.... this forum is full of the nay sayers, but they all come back... and they mostly all trade up to the next incarnation of our friend the GS.

I LOVE MINE.

When I bought my 1200 GSA 2006 there was a leak in the final drive seal when there was zero kms in the clock! The dealer noticed it and the seal was changed. Now, after 24 000 kms there is again a leak in the final drive seal:blast. There have been some other problems as well: corrosion in the engine guards, speedometer failure, poor paint finish, broken rear brake etc. :mad:Tell me what to do: the warranty is soon over. Can I afford this quality bike anymore?

Rode my 1200GS today, what a hoot, probably the best bike I've owned, sure footed and the rough road surface smoothed out by the suspension.

Over 30 k miles and the original suspension still works well, still has the original fuel pump relay, though the FD was changed about 1000 miles ago:D

I think most of my worries about the GS breaking down would be solved by riding more and typing less:beerjug::beerjug:
