2009 and 2010 GS Adventures vs. 2014 Triumph Tiger Explorer.

I would hope you encouraged anyone to go british. If we dont support british companies, who will?

I cant think of any country in europe where the pop dont support their indigenous manufacturers. Maybe thats why germany, france and italy have a motor industry and we dont

Erm, you didn't look at the posters location did you :blast

I`ll take a noisy tappet over a dodgy FD any day ;) and no, mine doesn`t seem too bad tbh :thumb

I think he was referring to the recall on the Tex where Triumph are changing the Cylinder Head due to noisy tappets.

Lee, I need to pick your brain...

My pal Ray was complaining over the weekend that his Explorer had developed an annoying gearchange bug: apparently, on some upshifts, pulling in the clutch and tapping the gear lever up did not yield a gearchange, and there was no resistance on the lever. Pulling in the clutch and tapping the lever up a second time usually sorted it.

I told him I've only ever seen that on high-mileage bikes where the shift forks and/or drum have worn, causing erratic gearchanges - but this is a brand-new bike with less than 1 000 Km on it.

He's trawled some Triumph forums but can't find any mention of this fault. Ever heard of anything like this?...

Hiya Nick, no, I`ve not noticed any probs like that on any of the forums but then again I`ve not been looking for that problem. With his bike well under warranty he should be high tailing it to the dealers and they`ll sort it out :D

Please post back with any findings :thumb

Perfect timing! :aidan

The 'solution' was found yesterday. Ray switches between Vega Merge boots (for 'everyday' and commuting use) and a pair of fairly heavy-duty adventure boots for longer rides.
I can't remember what brand these boots are, but they have a fairly thick sole.
Upshifts require extra care, because if he doesn't deliberately move his foot down and away from the lever after completing the upshift, said upshift doesn't always happen. And moving the lever tang further away from the footpeg isn't an option - the Explorer's lever is adjustable for angle, but not for reach.

So for now, all Ray has to do is be a bit more deliberate on upshifts. :thumb

No problems with the Merge boots - they have a much slimmer instep/sole configuration (and as a side note, I can vouch for them. I also own a pair, and they're the second-most comfy pair of bike boots I've ever owned).

The triple motors are very good but the rest of the bikes are just so-so.

And a word of warning. I did some touring with a mate on a Tiger 800 and me on the 12GS (2007 vintage). I got truly fed up with having to stop every time his pathetically small fuel tank ran down to the warning light. At the arctic circle we were chatting to some other chap who turned up on a GSA and I had to laugh when he was asked about the fuel capacity :thumby:

What about an Acerbis auxiliary fuel tank (easily mounted on any flat surface on the rear of the bike)? Or something by Rotopax?

Touratech make a superb GSA-style fuel tank for the F800GS. But it is so expensive here that I've only ever seen one - and that was on the Touratech dealer's demo bike.

Tiger 800 = 19L fuel tank
R1200 GS = 20L fuel tank

.....Tiger pathetically small?:nenau

That must be an 09 GS1200. I cant imagine the GS 800 is worse on fuel than the Trumpet.

My 08 adv does 51mpg at motorway speeds without luggage and 48mpg with luggage. Luggage loaded or empty makes no difference.

He had to fill up every 140 miles :nenau

What has this to do with the Explorer?

Just amazes me how tribal this whole thing is. I have ridden both the GS12 and the Tex. They are both phenomenally good bikes. In some areas, the GS is better, in others The Tex. As Nick said earlier, there isn't a BAD bike made by the current major manufacturers. They are all good at some things, less so at others. But the tripe that is trotted out by some contributors about these machines, in this case the Explorer 1200, is risible. I hear the same type of nonsense when I listen to people talk about football teams. Why do people feel so threatened by the emergence of another machine in a certain class?

Quite agree. It's the Ducatis that are really shite.

You're new here aren't you;)

It's a GS forum old son so folk will defend their choice of steed. :thumby:

Oh my goodness. It's like walking into a dodgy local pub as an 'outsider'...."You ain't from round 'ere are you?"

Like I say, very tribal and comments consequently often or even usually without basis other than blind brand loyalty. Old son.
