there have been various threads related to rough running, pick up and stalling on the 2010 twin cam engine. a batch of bikes ( all ?) have had the cam sensor replaced. my own new bike was faulty in this respect when delivered and had the cam timing reset at 200 miles after stalling and the cam sensor replaced at the 6000 mile service. From 6000 to current 8500 I had become increasingly concerned that some of the smoothness I had marvelled at previously did not seem quite as good. Most noticeable when trickling along in 30mph limits in second and third gear ( a bit of a lumpy delivery) and when revving the engine helmet off the engine note seemed a little flat or rough. Otherwise it seemed to have plenty of power and I had hard time convincing myself there was something wrong but finally took in to Southport Superbikes this morning to settle my conscience.

They confirmed that despite having been set at the 6000 mile service the cam timing on one cylinder was 2degrees out and the throttle balance was some way out. Gave it a really good look over, careful retune and no charge :clap. Riding home no doubt the bike is back on top form - quite a marked difference in smoothness throughout the rev range, low speed delivery and pick up when blipping in down changes.

A couple of thoughts to share coming out of this

1) It's very hard to know if you're bike is slightly off but when its right you can immediately feel the difference - I reckon there could be a lot of 2010 riders out there who are oblivious to the fact their bike is below par because just off great is still very good.

2) these bikes do seem very sensitive to throttle balance and cam timing as read by the already once modified cam sensor. Is this because the twin cam engine is in a higher state of tune? Does the previous generation of R1200 engine even have a cam sensor ?

3) Throttle balance can shift with stretching cables but I am beginning to wonder if the cam sensor also drifts in normal usage. doesn't sounsd like this is DIY task to check since I remember the dealer had to get in special equipment to set which unsurprisingly was in short supply when the problem emerged.

My bike is great now but I shall be interested to see how this issue of maintaining the correct level of tune on 2010 engine develops.

I know its not relevant on a GSA but here goes:-

Was with two of my sports bikes mates tonking it down the M55 (private part of it:augie) after the sports bikes dissapeared into the distance I held the throttle to the stop for mile upon mile, the speedo reading at any point, including one hand on the handlebar and as tucked in as I could be never went above 125 mph.

Took it to Southport Superbikes for a single cylinder cam timing adjustment recall.

All well and good, bike seemed fairly normal no probs. however going to work, next day on the duel carriageway, not thinking anything about it, looked down at the speedo and it was registering a needles breadth over 130 mph.

My conclusion Southport Superbikes :thumb2

Best regards Stretch :)

I have just come up to 10 000 miles on mine - 2010 bike. Had the big service and when I got home, I had to call and ask if they had removed my accelrator module as it was very jerky. They said no. I still haven't checked and don't think it likely. (3 weeks now) but it is defo jerky, particularly at low speeds, and cornering. I feel i have to be very gentle on the throttle to not step it out and careful not to lose power on exit! I even feel that going down the road and over small bumps, like the acceleration almost jumps. Like I am deliberatley opening and closing the throttle. Hard to explain and I agree I also think it must be me. But its worrying when it sometimes wants to almost cut out! And if I had a pillion on the straight and bumpt roads, they would get whiplash! Reckon I'll take it in soon and ask them to check. How do i make sure they listen to me?
