does the 2010 GS/A have a new FD or is it the same as a 2008/9 ?

think the ratios have changed a little but it is the same old design, bearings and all that. Answer to your next question is, yes it will probably fail just as randomly as the older bikes which means maybe tomorrow or maybe in 10 years. Your bike is new, has a 2 year warranty so why sweat it.

I was told by the stealer that the design has changed to incorporate a drain plug and a breather

Drain plug was already on the 08-09 no idea about a breather though.

I compared mine (09 GSA) with a new 10 GSA on Saturday and there seems to be an extra black bobbly bit near the brake calliper at the top of the final drive. Hard to see what it actually is though.

Black bobbly bit is a breather and there is also a small pipe thus my hugger from 09 bike will not fit.
