2010 less power - BIKE mag shock

I think the main thing is the newer DOHC model accelerates faster and has a higher top speed - simple as that.

Next week I will have the 105bhp model and 110bhp model side by side in the garage, at the moment I only have my experience of riding both and of watching the DOHC model coming past me when I am doing 125-130mph and there was a top box on it (the same bike/rider has done this on a few occasions when we have both been flat out - standard bike too)!

In truth, I don't think a few bhp either way matters, as long as you are out there enjoying yourself who cares.

I think there is a certain threshold, probably around 50bhp or less were a bike can feel "short of beans" on occasion however there are some good bikes that are made for that sort of power level .. any more in them would not be good. eg - older British bikes, the new Honda 700, CX500 and more.

I believe my bike .. 06 GS makes about 85 bhp, totally standard, it's enough for me, I have a kind of self imposed maximum of 90mph ... more for my personal safety and the longevity of my licence than anything else, - should I wish to my bike will exceed that and by some, it's fast enough to avoid being trampled by a cage and will waft along on torque alone in the mid range, and I can use most of what I have should I chose to (or not if I am lazy), - Perfect,

If I wanted more I could buy it, .. looked at the Honda VFR1200, nice bike but could I use it properly, I doubt it. I can understand those who might want a ZZR1400 or ilk, I would willingly try one for an afternoon, but ownership, no, I think it would become an exercise in constant restraint.

My brother, on a MY04 GS, will easily outrun me (and most others) on anything I care to ride - which shows just how versatile these are. I looked at the VFR1200 as an additional bike, but not sure I could justify it - at times I'd like the 20-30 mph (usable) additional speed though.

The big difference between earlier R12GS's and the DOHC R12GS is in the delivery of the torque : it's higher from 2000 rpm up to 5000 rpm, and that's exactly where most riders will rev the engine. :thumb2

Can't this be achieved with a re-map?
I believe the 2010 has a much louder zorst.
I suspect that a 2004-2009 could be given similar output for less money?

The DOHC has a much much louder exhaust - we have three of them in the family (soon to be 4) my standard 08 seems very muted next to a Full Remus 04 and a standard DOHC - I would say it negates the need for an after market exhaust for most people now - in the past if you didn't like how quite it was, an after market alternative was the only answer.

While I am sure a remap will help the older bikes - the newer one is going to be stronger and faster with the same mods. So it all depends on what you want. the GS is now may main bike and I wish it was quicker - so a faster DOHC would be welcome - I wonder what you could get out of a DOHC without actually changing internals - just full pipe and re-map etc. 125bhp, or preferably 130-135bhp would be killer imo
