does anybody have any thoughts on the possibility that the boxer engine as we know it may not pass emission tests for 2010,Is there any truth in the rumour that the KTM V Twin will be used in the gs.Woooo that could just be the perfect bike IMHO,

the new GS will be out in 2011. The rumour (from their R&D in Munich - my sisters boyfriend is working there in the lifing department) is that indeed we have seen the last iteration of the boxer engine. They need more clean power out of it and are not able to achieve it either by increasing capacity or increasing the engines efficiency in thermodynamic terms (making the engine produce more work and less heat out of its fuel). That means they need to look at other configurations.

I haven't heard of any KTM engine rumours, though its well known they have poached many people from BMWs R&D over the years (ktm now has over 200 r&d staff up from 25 in 2001). That has no link to any BMW usage of KTM parts whatsoever, and why would they do it since they have the funds and the know how to design themselves.

The only story that i have actually been told by him (and is a non kept secret) is that a larger version of the 800 parallel twin is already on test benches and is watercooled, quiet, vibration free and will be the cleanest motorbike engine ever made. What they are going to do with it and if its due to fit a new RT, ST and or GS is to be seen.... I would guestimate a yes, even if bro in law to be won't say an inch more..

Certainly makes sense to me that a grown up version of the 800GS twin is on the cards for its bigger brother.

I just can't see KTM licensing their engines to BMW; and I don't see the need for BMW to license it either.

I recall seeing the KTM logo on a couple of components on my 2004 model R1200GS. Go figure....:nenau

It`s normal for manufacturers to use each others parts as a money saving exercise. Truck manufacturers in particular do it all the time. i.e Mercedes Benz Trucks use MAN axles.

Engine`s though are a different story and I cannot see BuMW using the KTM lump not least because they are fighting for the same market.

Favourite has to be a bigger version of the 800 lump which I reckon should make a cracking bike as long as the keep the same design ethos.

It will be a great shame when the boxer engine goes because of emission regs.

Normally when BMW bring out specials, it is a clue that they getting out old stock . The 1200 RT is only available factory fresh in black only ( they still have the normal colours in stock) in SE trim .
The 1150RT had a 4 year life span...
