i am looking for a 1200gs twin cam, i have found one a couple of hours from home, 2012 triple black with only 15000 miles on it. it has dealer history till 10000 miles miles which was in 2016 with no history after, the fella wants £7000, he has had it a year, did a big european trip last year, in my mind it needs a major service, am i potentially buying trouble? what is the bike worth?

Its worth what you are prepared to pay :)

Ive seen similar bikes with less milage go for less here

I paid 6K for a 2011 TB 16K on the clock with a mix of dealer & indie servcing as per schedule - condition wise - mint

It needed new tyres from the off, the originals although having lots of tread, were way past it age wise

ive had it a year, and have just had the 24k service done at 21K

Servicing is a mix of miles and age

So at 6K, 12k (2 year ) 18k, 24K (2 year) i believe

So yours has had PDI , 1st service .5k , then it should be 6k, 12k, 18k & 24k with the 12k & 24k being the 2 year services

Thats a biggy £400+ at an indy

worth it? Absoloutly :D

I did some rough mileage checks

At worst case it needs a major service

Oil & filter
Air filter
Plugs x4
Belts
Brake fluid change
Gearbox oil change
Rear hub oil change
Valve clearances

I had some additional work & an MOT done , and it cost £420

However i suppled all the OE parts inc new pads F&R & all lubricants which you need to factor in as well

Is it a private or delear sale

it is a private sale, all of the service i can do myself bar valve adjustment and brake fluid change due to needing the diagnostic tool. in my view it is over priced and the seller seems unwilling to move even though it has been for sale for a while.

You can do all of the service yourself, but not the valve adjustment?

It's a twin cam - if you can do the 'service' then you can do the valves (check/adjust if needed). Has to be the easiest bike - ever - to do this on - saying that, there is a high likelihood they won't even need adjusting!

Then ask your self the following

Why has it been on sale for that time
Why is the seller unwilling to move on price
Have you gone back to the seller and explained the additional costs involved ??

More importanlty whay do you want ""that"" bike

What makes it so special you have to have it ?

Mileage ? age ? SH ?

Mileage- ok it may be low, but it wont remain low - so unless its mega miles dont let that put you off

Age, yes it's the last of the twin cams - but there are lots out there with low mileage & potentially low price

SH its just stamps in the book - your going to do it your self, so then that side of things becomes irrelevant

Tell the seller its overpriced, make an offer and leave it

to give you an idea

Low miles can sometimes cause more issues due to age and how well it’s been stored. Rubber doesn’t age well in UV especially and grease and bearings can dry up.

I recently got a 2011 with 30k for a good price, it was a little tatty but service history and folder of receipts was impeccable. So for me mechanically if it’s been looked after then it’s easy to tidy up with some time spent.

Plenty decent deals out there, although this looks a nice bike I don’t think it’s worth what seller is asking.

God loves a trier mind you. It might be his wife wants him to sell which he is trying but with a high price he knows it won’t go. That’s what I’d do if missus asked me to punt due to little use 😃

thanks for your input gents, seller won,t take less than £6900 so i guess he will be sitting on it for a while.

This lad looks to have a nice 2010, not a gsa but is a twin cam.

Sounds a tad expensive unless it is in super nice condition. As said earlier low mileage can be as bad as high mileage. Also a super service, done by yourself, is only about £150. Don't trust a full history too much as my 2010 had 11 documented oil filter changes but the filter was date stamped as a 2009. The only thing that matters on a used bike is condition.

Pains me to say it,
Hold your horses and wait for the right bike and deal.
There’s more than enough 1200’s out there for sale
+1
I missed a 20k 11 plate for 6K :(

But picked up an 11 plate TB with 16k on the clock for the same money a few weeks later :)

I sold my TC over 3 years ago for circa £4.5K thay have had it for sale for all this time at £6700 not a hope of selling it at that price

its all about condition - in not long, with all the modern rubbish being unreliable trash made of scrap metal and disintegrating electronics - the price of older stuff will increase - don't forget a basic spec new GS, - aka with the bare essentials you'd actually buy - not the lies in the range of poverty spec possibilities coming in at 26k, the price you think is high, just isn't anymore

my full spec GSA TC just hit 10k miles has 10 dealer service stamps and is like new - u can have it for 9k if u want - the older one is twice the bike

Why would he want yours, all you've done is moan about how bad it is?

dont you have odd rubber on it, a shonkey fuel strip and other ailments ??

no - I have 2 GS's the one I hate is the mint, low mile, 100% original, as new TC - you can't even get the key in the ignition as some retard at BMW modified the yoke vs the correct original GS, so the bars are in the wrong place and you have 3" drop of no space to try and fight the key into

Why did you buy it?
