Hello Everyone,

As the title states, I ride a 2013, 90th Anniversary Edition, air cooled, twin cam bought from my local dealer (Rainbow). It only has 5500 miles on it and uses about half a litre of oil per 1000miles, and presently runs with Shell Advantec 15W-50, which I get from my dealer at £16/litre. I can't seem to find this oil for sale anywhere else and was wondering if any of the other members on this site knew of somewhere else to buy this from. Alternatively, can a different brand/type be used with no detriment?

Thanks in advance,

Johnny.

Try Opie oils they carry a good range of oils.

Opie oils, got the lot...20/50 castrol plus brake fluid and gearbox / final drive in 1 ltrs or 4 / 5 litres. Order Monday here on Wednesday.Never let me down.

Thanks for the replies guys - I know that the dealer is recommending Shell oil because BMW have a deal with them, however, Castrol was the recommended choice previously, and as I have a few litres spare in the garage I was just looking for a bit of reassurance about topping up with the Castrol in between services - any thoughts?

One advantage of buying new....you can 'run em in proper' then they don't burn any oil.

use motul 300v 15w-50 the best you can buy

Use it up - the bike doesn't know BMW have changed marketing arrangements.
Any decent quality oil of approximately the right grade will do.

I take it you mean: Revving the nuts off it and hitting the rev limiter regularly through the gears. Both of the bikes I bought in recent years used oil until I "run them in" in this fashion.

10W-40 is as good as anything else.

Local motor factors Just grab 5 litres of anything fully synthetic. Cheapest is best. Circa £18.00 here in Norn Iron.

Page 133 of my Rider's Manual" (R1200RT Twincam) gives the required engine oil specification as API SF / ACEA A2 or Better. Viscosity classes range from SAE 5W-40 up to SAE 15W-40 with a couple of SAE 50's thrown in for good measure. All very confusing to me as I don't understand the various squiggles which are no doubt indicative of various ambient temperatures. I would think that the important part is the API SF standard. Castrol Power 1 which was "fitted" by my dealer at the last two services is rated as 15W-50 which is not included in the list of recommended oils in my Rider's Manual !!.

Coz BMW changed the recommendations again, too easy to buy 15W-40 off the shelf, 15W-50 shell not so easy to find!

Can anybody explain the various squiggles that appear just before the temperature numbers in the manual. Thanks.

I ran my old air cooled GS in gently and my RT hard and they both used a lot of oil (the RT was worst at 500ml/1000miles). The rental RT I had the the USA was slightly better, but still used quite a bit.

The GS LC is a breath of fresh air as it doesn't use any between services 👍

If you have the anniversary model then you MUST use the special oil developed for the bike........ I can't remember the brand but the oil itself has the gold anniversary pinstripes as specified by BMW :green gri

ONNAOT
