Just been for a run of about 100 miles, before setting off bike was showing a range of 53 miles so put 15 liters of fuel in and after riding for 10'mins range went up to 190 miles after about another 15/17 miles riding fuel gauged started falling rapidly like loosing 1 mile range per 200 meters traveled stopped at a lay by as I thought I had a fuel leak but all was fine.

Rode on and bike trip went as low as 96 miles then its stopped drooping and stayed around the 105 miles range for another 20 miles.?

Is my fuel strip faulty ?

All has been fine with fuel gauge and range trip until now, bike has covered 4800 miles ?

Thanks

Paddy

Welcome to the world of BMW fuel gauges. I have a 2010 GSA, - it does all the things listed in your post plus many more. I have seen 61.5 mpg, and a tank range of 512 miles, - both highly unlikely. Each time it has been presented for service I have mentioned these faults/anomalies to be told 'there's not much we can do, - BMW are aware of the problem'

You would thing that a world 'Brand' like BMW could sort out these issues on a £14k bike, - wouldn't you?

Paddy - If yours (like mine) is a 2013 GSA then you have a fuel float and not a strip which became the norm post October 2010 I understand.

The trip meter does need time to recalibrate and works from previous values.

I am finding mine to be OK although I use the trip meter as I grew up without computers..

As above Paddy. I filled mine today and did around 40 odd miles crawling round single track roads being a bit daft and finding Plum and Apple trees along the way. I'd covered about 35miles to get to that area and it was now reading 430 miles range. It'd do that no doubt if I still poodled around at stupidly slow speeds.
Back on bigger roads and 55-65mph and it's down to 300miles. It's what it does. I think 438 is the highest I've seen. Now there's a thread in the making..?

Thanks for the replies.

As I said in my original post done nr 5000 miles and this was my first experience of erratic readings, going to brim it set the trip and see what happens.

Cheers
Paddy

Reset your gauges too so the computer is with you..

They did with the float system - agreed that this should have been a free fix really to those with the strip.

Gauge is right, on my 2011 it is not uncommon for the indicated tank range to increse as you ride, the onboard computer is reading your riding speed and stylle and measuring the fuel in the tank and working out the range.
Speed up or get on twisties with lots of gearchanges etc range will drop, stay on an A class at a steady speed the range will start to increase.

Spot on.

Does anyone know if the change to a float was part of the standard GS technical update in 2010?
