2013 GSA - which road tyres?

Sorry for bringing this up yet again but having been through all the threads I'm still none the wiser.

My 90th Edition GSA came with Karoos which I'm finding twitchy and slidey on wet/greasy roads and are far from confidence inspiring, had a huge foot down slidey moment today pulling away in 2nd at a right T junction so I think I need a change.

PR4s seem to be the weapon of choice but reports of these being twitchy to begin with worry me a little - what are the other options / the general consensus? This will be for road only and '1 up with luggage' Europe touring.

Also - worth selling the Karoos or how long will they keep if I decide to do some light trails in a year or two?
 
Any road biased tyres will do, I prefer Michellin, you are not going to really notice the difference in grip between the makes. Unless you are going to ride it on hard packed gravel and avoid the muddy bits I wouldn't worry about keeping the Karoos. Flog it on here, someone will grab a bargain. TKC 80 or 70, Heidenhau K60 and there is a new one on the market should suffice for the occasional off the road excursion. But before you do venture into the muddy roads keep in mind that the Adv is a bastard to wash if that is your thing.
 
pr trail 4 you know it makes sense martin,btw none of mine have been twitchy from the start just very smooth and easy.
 
For pure road tyres I've had both Roadsmarts and PR3's. The PR3's edge it in the wet but they're both great tyres. I'm sure PR4's are too. I'm surprised you couldn't find what you were looking for given all the threads on this subject - can only be second to oil threads. What was it specifically you were looking for?
 
I've just had Conti Road Attack 2 Evo's fitted......will be testing them out quite soon.....:green gri
 
My bike came fitted with some squared off Conti Road Attacks. They were horrible in the wet, struggling for grip even in a straight line, fairly neutral throttle over metal access covers. I replaced them with a set of Tourance Nexts and I loved them. On the same bit of rubbish road in the wet they were completely different but then they were new. They were equally brilliant on a track day (dry).

I've just had PR4s put on my replacement bike which is a barry basic KTM (GSA was stolen), they're ok, not blowing me away yet, but then we riders expect miracles and it has hardly been much above freezing over the last couple of weeks.
 
I think there is a lot of nonsense spoken about tyres. You were riding on greasy roads with a very small contact patch and you may have hit a bit of oil or gravel which cause the tyre to lose grip. It doesn't mean the tyres are rubbish. I was talking to a guy who reckoned his tyres were rubbish because when he hit the white lines in the rain his bike twitched! Hmmm, small contact patch on wet slippy paint.....:blast

I've had everything from TKC's, Heidenau's, right through to the dreaded death wings and can't remember ever having a big slide. That's a lie, when my last set of K60's were on their last legs, I had a moment on shitty roads in Wales which made me change them but they had done 12000 miles.

I guess it's down to confidence and if you really feel you can't trust your tyres, you have to change.

Having said all that, the PR4's seem to be really good and last pretty well. I have PR3's on my Capanord and they do feel very solid and secure.
 
It's funny how people compare a new tyre with max tread and best contour - with the knackered, squared-off previous model - they rode into the shop on.................

and pronounce that the new tyre is "significantly better"........ :blast

Plus 1 for the PR4s. I got mine from a local branch of Guildford Tyres, 97.50 for the front and 107.00 for the rear, both plus vat and wheel removal, Alan
 
I had new PR4s on my last GSA12 back last summer, for a week long trip around the Picos. Utterly superb tyre compared to the *new* Anakee3s which I had just put on the Varadero - these too were great tyres, but the PR4s stuck like shit on a shovel.

PR4's on my 13 GSA and they work great - no need to look ay further.
 
I'm going the other way this time with some Heidenau K60 Scouts. £150 pair from Tyre Leader, though K76 are even less. at £130
