Just bought a lovely 1200RT, last of the Twin Cams and wondered if I could charge the battery using my C-Tek charger or will I have to get the BMW jobbie? I don’t wan’t to chance anything in case it fries the Canbus system.
Tia.

Just put a lead direct to the battery. But you do not need the BMW charger. If you want to use the socket you need a can bus compatible but if you go direct to the battery and you have a can bus compatible model, you need to switch it out of can bus mode. BMW do not make bespoke chargers, they just rebadge so there is nothing special about a BMW conditioner. I have used my non BMW charger on twin cams and the LC bikes

I fitted a socket on the opposite R/H side from the canbus socket, with a direct connection to the battery.

The steel framework in the tail area has a cutout for this very purpose.

Pierce a centre hole through from the inside (I used a scriber). Use a flat wood boring bit to remove the plastic and create the opening.

Fit a DIN charger socket with a sprung lid (plenty on e bay, identical to the canbus plug already fitted on the L/H side).

Connect to the battery. +ve to centre of the socket.

Looks factory fitted.

I use an Oxford charger.

1st battery lasted 9 years.
