Yesterday I took my 2014 GSA to have the fork recall done and sitting there on the floor was a "used" 2016 R1200RS. History of it: my dealer got the bike through BMW who themselves took it from another dealer that closed down three months ago. In doing so the warranty started ticking from that point so it's warranted (unlimited milage) until January 2021. It has only 25 miles on it and comes with what's called in the U.S. as "Premium Package" which consists of about every option, but no panniers. From just sitting on it the riding position feels good and I like the colour.

So I started thinking about trading..... I know an RS a little less expensive motorcycle but it's essentially the same drivetrain. I'd gain two model years, go from over 30,000 miles back to 25, have three years warranty, and (hopefully) get rid of the one issue I've had with my particular GSA which is the suspension sometimes becomes very, very, harsh. Also the GSA somewhat duplicates my Africa Twin and I have nothing that duplicates an RS.

With all this in mind I started chatting with the salesman/owner and asked him to work up what difference he'd want to trade. He went in the shop, checked my bike over, and came back with my GSA plus $2,000, which was actually a little better than I expected considering he already has two white 2014 GSA's just like mine in his used inventory. I said "my GSA has factory panniers which would go with the bike so $1,000 difference seems reasonable". He thought a minute and asked if I'd want factory panniers on the RS, which I allowed I did. He said "ok $1,000 difference and I'll sell you factory luggage for the RS at 20% off which will be about $800". I agreed and left my GSA there, he ordered the panniers and will call when they arrive in a week or so. Anyway here it sits. I'll post back with my impression after picking it up and getting a few hundred miles on. it. (I know I'm going to miss the extra petrol capacity but I won't miss the extra 100+ pounds of weight.)

That sounds like a great deal. I was looking at the RS a couple of weeks ago when I was having my fork mod on the GS and they look like a cracking bike :thumb2

Hmmm maybe that's how BMW hopes to sell RS's.... recall GS/A owners in to install a ring on their forks then park a RS in plain sight? :D

The rs is a much ignored bike, and probably does 90% of the things a gs can do.

I just bought an R1200st for swmbo, it is ugly she said; I know, but I'll just be focused on your arse was my reply.

She's still quiet

Ride magazine have recently reviewed one and were mightily impressed. It is a bike which slips under the radar but is a very, very capable machine. Enjoy it!

Really like the look of the RS. A good swap I'd say.

Nothing wrong with focusing on a woman's behind, Tractors! :D. (Most women at least)

Thanks guys. I wish it were a 2017 or 18 with the driveline improvements but it should be the same as my 14 GSA and it works fine for me.

I had one of these as a courtesy bike. Took it to Inverness and around the cairngorms in all manner of conditions. Didn't skip a beat and went like shit off a shovel. Screen was no good for my lanky frame however. Rest was spot on.

Looks lovely mate.

I really liked the RS only thing that pushed me towards the GS was 6ft 2 so RS felt a little cramped, and ride a lot 2 up so extra shock travel won it for the GS, but you made a great deal

Me too when I was having some warranty work carried out - hated it. The steering was heavy and I couldn't get used to the wind noise.

I just couldn't gel with it.

My last RS was an R1100RS back in 1995 and I rode that bike all over the country over the 3-4 years I owned it. I liked the handlebars on it and the ones on this bike seem similar, the windshield is different so I may have to sort that out. Honestly stock windshields seldom bother me at all, seats are a different story. Anyone know what seat is on the bike pictured? And what position it is in?

I’ve got a 2016 rs and done 9000 miles on it now. It’s bloody brilliant. I wouldn’t get rid of my 09 1200gs if I could only have 1 bike but it’s a fantastic bike. Haven’t got any complaints about it and haven’t had a single issue with it.

Great to hear! Any thoughts on the seat?

One prefers hot chocolate with marshmallows to coffee, but sadly swmbo asked me to slim down a tad.

As most gs's get closest to off road whilst refuelling at Tesco's I find your comments somewhat questionable, but keep up the good works.

But each to their own, life would be so boring otherwise.

When I finally decide to move on from the GSA I think it will be for an RS - looks lovely.
