2014 LC

Almost all the bikes I happen to move off with at green lights clonk into 1st, regardless of brands and models. If not all.

Exactly - but it is surprising how many newbies don't realise this and think that it is a fault and a few old farts who were wedded to the dry clutch and all its attendant problems and characteristics.
The 1200 LC clutch drags a little too much for my liking and takes a bit of getting used to after the last 8 years of using a dry clutch but that is to be expected.

They'll be complaining that the rear wheel DOESN'T turn when the bike's on the centre stand in neutral next :augie :augie

Obviously the new improved gear box has fixed the gearbox 'drag' fault of the old bike :D

Is there ANY degree of fault, poor design (or simply a problem that should not exist on such an expensive bike) that you aren't prepared to forgive? :blast

If it is 'real' then yes but I suspect that 95% of what we are talking about here is purely subjective therefore there will be a range of opinions - some will say it is a fault and some will say it is 'character'.

If you want something specific - then I'd say the BMW switchgear is not well designed (or manufactured) because it clearly fails at times in normal use - but this is a clear failure not a subjective thing like the gearbox/clutch feel.

who cares if it clonks into gear? does it ride well?
:blast

It rides extremely well better than any of the previous GSes by a long way :D

+ 1 on that I love mine and cant wait to get my GSA in March, for me its more the tank range for my commute to work it will mean I can get to work all week with one full tank

Cheers Terry

I agree with the above, my 2013 clonked and gearbox was notchy but it handled and performed far better than my TC tbh regardless of its faults it was fooking awesome i luv'd every mile of the 7k i did on it, and if my 2014 clonks into 1st than fine, it won't stop me thrashing it a good'un and enjoying a truly good bike

Some may say the clonks not acceptable ! For me its not whats acceptable, its how the issues are resolved by your dealer. Try owning a Ducati, you than find every issue is acceptable, i brought a 999R just a couple months old at the time, i fitted a larger 749R tank and toured around Europe on it, left it out in torrential rain in Austria for days, it stalled at junctions now and again, bits fell off it, but it was one of the best bikes I've owned.

Less moaning and more riding.

Can anyone, who has a 2014 model confirm whether or not the 2014 model 'clonks' into first gear?

To answer your question after 2000 miles on the new one a MY14 I can honestly say it still clonks and is no better than the MY13 (7500 miles n two clutches in six months) I got shot of, hot or cold.

BUT the gear change is substantially better and finding neutral and it leaping forward when engaging gear is now fine. So this one the clutch reluctantly let's go and releases, the previous disaster didn't so drag caused six months of play in hide n seek with neutral and terrible gear changes.

And rides a lot better than any of the previous bikes I've ridden in 30 years of continuous ownership. (Though the S1000RR is also equally awesome in a completely different way!)

Bikes don't have synchromesh so they will all clonk into 1st gear. Also not having synchro they are better with a clutch that drags very slightly - it keeps the gears spinning so those who cant change gear properly (usually too slow) get less of a crash.

From cold it's avoided by starting the engine in 1st gear with clutch pulled in. At the traffic lights pull the clutch a few seconds before selecting 1st and dont rev the engine.

Strangely I do all that on my hexhead. ;)

Owning a Kawasaki as a 2nd bike, I'm sure the new GSLC is whisper quiet in comparison when changing into 1st gear :blast

Everyone should have to ride with ZZR cush drives until they man the fuck up! ;)
