Hi All,

I'm thinking of changing my bike for a GS, the shop near me has a 2014 model with approx 35000 miles on it.
Can anyone recommend anything to look at on the bike bar a regular road test, I keep reading all sorts of horror stories about reliability and corrosion,
is it as bad as it appears on the internet?
Is the GS an easier ride 2 up than the GSA, I had a 1200 Explorer for a while but got fed up with the top heavy feel I noticed the GS feels a lot different sat in the showroom.
Would the model before the LC option be more reliable?
I don't do a lot of mileage, most of my rides are 2 up chugging around the moors or along the coast, with the occasional trip away.
thanks for any advice.

The GS LC is a great two up bike. If the bike doesn't have any corrosion on it at present, the bike should be fine. Have a good look at the engine case/cylinder joins all the way round. If the bike is on it's original suspension allow £500 for front and back to be overhauled regardless of how it feels at the moment.

Are you buying from a generic bike shop, or a BMW dealership?

The early LC's had issues with the stator failing, which is an engine out / split to change the stator ring.

About 8hrs each way i believe , then you have a stator to add.

You can have an BMW extended warranty, but there are a few caveats

The bike must go to a BMW workshop to have the service schedule brought up to date , and you cant opt for the £0 excess it will be either £50 or £100 excess

then you get a 1 year warranty which you can renew up to 80k

Most of these failures were early on this bike has done 35000 so I would guess this is a good one. I have a 2014LC since new and the only issue I've had is to have the rear shock refurbished and a new battery apart from normal brake pads and tyres etc. Mine has done 28000. The shock was refurbished by Luke https://ttechsuspension.com/ contact from this site and well under £500.

The 2014 stator has 17 (or so) windings that are prone to burning out - the replacement has 20 or so windings

Your lucky, to date on my 2016

New fuel cap assy
New LH switch pack
New throttle grip assy
New TG harness
New rear shock
New ECU

The shock was £1k plus with goodwill, dont ask about the non goodwill price !!

Yet my Sept 2016 bike has had no warranty work. Done 16k miles.
I took the initiative to have both shocks refurbished 500 miles ago.

There will always be people who have had issues - I had a 2013 LC in April 13 - I had the left hand switch assembly replaced, and that was it. It always ran like a peach, and I did numerous trips all over Europe on it. I had it for 6.5 years, and 26,000 mls. Only got rid of it coz I wanted something different. So I got a 1200XE Scrambler - loved it, but after 18months I got another GS... Ive had 5... its a personal thing, but this time I got the GSA, I had 2 in the oil head 1200 version, and for me I prefer the GSA over the standard GS, they feel more 'planted'
Cheers
