2014 RT's GROUNDED! DO NOT RIDE!

As they're telling people not to ride them, I'll assume they will be collecting the bikes from the customers homes, in a van, and delivering a loan bike.:nenau

Good job they've not sold that many.:augie:P

I was generalising, with the buggeration factor - with faults on a new bike:D

Not just this particular event

What happens if the dealer doesn't have a Van?

BMW Assist or push it:D

BMW assist, I guess. Are there any dealers without a van?

Wapping will enjoy this thread!:D

If they WHAT.....!?!?!? :eek These are BMW Motorrad dealerships, Sir. I think you'll find that they all have vans. In fact, I believe they're all required to have white vans with the appropriate branding logos on them.

Erm................I know 2 that don't:D

From the horses mouth.A statement from BMW reads: "We regret to inform you that with immediate effect all 2014 R 1200 RT with Dynamic ESA must not be ridden. At this moment, we cannot guarantee that the plunger rod assembly for the rear suspension unit will not fail.
"Customers of affected machines will be contacted by their dealer immediately and asked not to ride their motorcycle. Whilst this is extremely disappointing for our customers their safety is BMW Motorrad's priority."

So what if you're on tour abroad (or in UK) ? do you have to stop riding it there and then ? how do you get home and do they compensate you for your loss ?

This matches the content of the call I received from the dealer today, they will pick bike up/drop it back, provide loan bike if required....don't, under any circumstances, ride it anywhere! Very reassuring ;)

That could be very expensive for BMW.:rob

According to my dealer my chassis number is listed as amongst those affected yet I don't even have Dynamic ESA fitted. Hoping to get clarification tomorrow.

Hmmmm...

I was contemplating trading my Multistrada for a new RT.

Maybe I'll stick with the nice, reliable, well-built and properly engineered Italian bike then!

Will be interesting to see what happens if some poor unfortunate who is say away touring in europe and cannot be contacted about the problem has an accident due to suspension failure !
BM could be in for a large claim

Serious question
Isn't the dynamic ESA the same on the GS ?

The parts fiche shows different part numbers for the rear ESA suspension for the GS, GSA and RT, so hopefully the affected component isn't common to all 3 bikes. I'd like to think someone at BMW would have checked when the problem was identified.

Hmm.the 2014 rt I rode had a rather spindly looking Italian marzocchi ESA strut on the back...

:blast

Yeh, i got the dreaded phone call yesterday from my dealer, telling me not ride my RT.

Lucky i wasn't using it for work, as they'd had to deliver me a replacement and ship my RT from Bicester to Bristol.

But as long as its sorted within a few weeks, i'm not too fussed about it all....
