Hi all, so whilst I was out on the roads this Sunday I managed to get a small hole in my left side radiator... Spraying coolant when hot....
Recovered the bike back to home, panels off, rad removed and its in for a repair at a professional repair centre.

My question is, when I get it back and refit it, what is involved with re-filling it so as not to get an air lock??

Dealer reckons only they can do it as it needs to be pumped in etc....

Is this right??

I haven't drained the system, when I removed the left rad only about 50ml of coolant came out of the rad, nothing is coming from either of the three hoses I have detached....

Thoughts please :thumb

I've refilled the radiator system with no problems (changed hoses to silicone and refilled with Evans Coolant)
Just needs filling, massaging pipes, running a bit, refill, massage etc etc until the air is pushed out.

This is great news, thanks, do I take the cap off the other tank (right side)whilst I fill the expansion tank or do I poor it into the rad direct and just I clip the lid on the expansion tank??

Hi

The pukka BMW way is to refill under pressure using the attached gadget

I and my riding friends have long repaired them with Epoxy Putty and ridden on 15 min later. None have ever leaked.

Fill via the radiator cap until you think you have all the air out, then replace cap and top up the expansion tank to full mark. Take bike for a run to get it up to temperature to move any trapped air through the system then let it cool to cold, this will pull fluid in from the tank. When cold, remove radiator cap, top up radiator if there's any room and replace the radiator cap, top up the expansion tank again and repeat until it stops pulling fluid from the tank and the radiators are full when you remove the rad cap.

Aaaaaarrrrrgggghhhhh why didn't I check for replies yesterday!!!!
I gave up in end, called my dealer... They can't look at it till next week... So called BMW recovery who were very helpful, said they would check that their techs have the vacuum, they do and that they would be there at 1830 last night as i was at work, 1900 came nothing, so I called again, they forgot to despatch anyone, again I asked to check whoever was coming would have the vacuum, again told yes. Guy turns up at 2100.... We don't carry the vacuum thing, dealer job, they came back n collected the bike this morning and took it to the dealer...... No doubt they will try to charge me labour now....
Thanks for the replies guys, just can't believe I didn't log on yesterday....
Needed to get it sorted as off on tour in two weeks and still got to get changed...
I'll let you know if it gets sorted 👍

Now then, who was it in another thread said, ha Radiator Guards You don't need them?????:rob

The K1300S has to be vacuum filled to remove any airlocks in the system which BMW claim could cause localised overheating and a cracked head. Looks like BMW are doing the same to all water cooled models to encourage/frighten owners to use their dealership services.
