Bike 30 months old with 25000 kms
BUT having 3rd yes 3rd engine fitted shortly due to corrosion again
2nd engine fitted after 7500 kms now 18 months later needs 3rd engine due too more corrosion
I’m glad I’m changing shortly to a XR

For the cash that's laid out for these machines you would expect a higher level of standard corrosion protection, I think bmw has lost its way ,personally I think they have to paint the engine cases because the aluminium they use is so poor it would dissolve in daily use, some of my jap bike's from the 70s still look good after 30 plus years.

This is only my opinion, but I personally think it is all to do with the paint used, in Germany solvants are banned in paint, so maybe in the old days the paint was better with more solvants.

The thing that gets me is that even though their cars use the water based paints also they are fine. It just seems to be the bikes and in particular the R series bikes.
Now I remember hearing (may not be true and is second hand information) that the high level of corrosion reported is mainly from Ireland and the UK. Mainland Europe doesn’t have it as bad - though bikes tend to garaged in winter.

BMW car wheels have had a few problems maybe its the paint they use on aluminium ?

Keep being told by dealer that the black painted engine are a problem due too Aluminium not being treated before being painted

They don’t apply any undercoat ! When centre stands lose their paint so very quickly you can see that they never applied undercoat. Saving money ?

Yep, my centre stand and subframe are rusty, 2017 bike, garaged and not really ridden in bad weather. Waiting for the dealer to see what BMW say about replacement under warranty.

The paint on my subframe on a 16 plate GS just flaked off leaving bare steel that then started to corrode, no signs of undercoat. BMW replaced it. The main frame on the same bike showed no signs of corrosion.

Do you use ACF50 or anything on it ? I'm over in Dublin and on my second GSA. Had a 16 and now on an 18 Triple Black, no problems with corrosion on any of them.

The dealer I purchased my bike from advises me to use ACF50, which I do. But really should a high end motorcycle need to be covered in anti-corrosion chemicals. None of the other motorcycles I’ve owned have needed this and some of these are over 20 years old.

When cars first switched to water based paints, they suffered a few teething problems too - micro rust blisters & the like. Really annoying - rust had crept right through the front wings on my 2001 merc after 5 years; thankfully replaced under warranty & the issue seems to have been overcome now. Indeed, self repairing paints are now coming to the market.

The problem BMW seem to have is the idea that they can penny-pinch on the finish yet retain a very premium price-point - centre stand, rear sub frame in particular, but engines on the GS & K16 too. Doubtless it's a risk calculated carefully, on a Worldwide scale, to account for potential warranty claims, knowing that many riders just can't be bothered to chase them down. Personally I can't get too excited about the likes of centre stands, they can have a blast/powder coat without too much stress, but the finish on the engine block is of paramount importance IMHO. The Japs do better, so BMW need to up their game pronto - this issue has been frustrating riders for far too long now & many will simply vote with their feet/wallets.

Any photos of corrosion please.
Maybe I’m lucky but I have had no problems
with corrosion on any of the many Bmw
bikes I’ve owned.
Famous last words hey!!!!!!
