2016 gs triple black corrosion

I'm voting with my wallet. BMW won't be getting any more of my money until things improve.

Still think they are great bikes but I'm not prepared to put good money after bad.

Mine was fine for the first couple of years but once it starts there is no stopping it.

Not good enough when you consider what they cost.

Dealer and BMW were no help.

My plan was to change every 3 years but now I will just keep it for as long as I can.

If enough of us stopped buying new bikes they might wake up and start improving the build quality.

My 2014 silver engine is corrosion free but absolutely lathered in ACF 50.

An air compressor, paint spray gun and 2 litres a year seem to be working

I daren’t buy a new one

I really don't get this premium brand thing and hence the expectation of no corrosion if used through winter in the UK. I paid a lot more for a Ducati that had corrosion on the anodising of the forks, front head cover and virtually every nickel plated part after 1 winter ride. I rarely ride in the winter but moved house so had to ride the bike to new house and when I washed it next morning the salt had eaten away at it.

My neighbour works for the council and he tells me the salt they now use in many regions of the uk is super corrosive compared to historic stuff. I can well believe it after the speed at which it attacked my Ducati. 1 stone chip on your engine paint, stand etc is all it takes for water and salt to get in etc etc. If your a regular motorway user I bet the whole bike is shot blasted with small stone chips.

Well at the end of the day, if mine ever starts rusting after the warranty period, it will be stripped and re-painted like in the old days, cannot be that hard, certainly cannot afford or want to buy a new bike every 3 years.

This threads a bit of a worry as my bike is a June 2018 GSA which had it's 600 mile service last Saturday and is now booked back into bmw for a new centre stand on the 8th Sept because of rust. Doesn't fill you with confidence about the rest of the bikes paint work

It certainly does not, I cannot get my head why some are rusting and some not.

Where I live they start salting the roads at the end of Oct/beginning Nov and keep on salting until beginning of march.

As I stop riding when they start salting there has never been any corrosion on any of my bikes.

Some people keep riding in the winter season, and this takes a terrible toll on the bikes, no matter what brand, including BMWs.
Salt is used since it is cheap, but is terrible to steel as well as aluminum and magnesium. That is why it's banned from airports. Even aviation-grade aluminum corrodes if exposed to salt.

From what I can observe, BMW are no better or worse than any other brand when it comes to corrosion. ANY vehicle corrodes when driven on salty roads., and if kept away from the salt they all handle the wet pretty well.

However, if the bike corrodes if it has never been ridden on salty roads, that's not good and should not be accepted. But personally I have yet to see that.

Just get a 1 inch brush and a tin of silver or black smooth hammerite. All will be good:D

Well I now have a 67 plate GSA Rallye TE and the rust has started to come through the paint on the rear subframe, its in the usual places around the rear footpeg hangers and along the seat rails. So I will be once again be getting a subframe replaced under warranty. You would have thought that by now BMW would have sorted out a hard wearing paint finish for this part of the GS!

I have a 2.5 year old Hilux

Rear under bumper the same, the satin black peeled off and rust appeared after a short time
I am on my 3rd one
This last one I had it properly bead blasted from new fitting and rust treated, then painted in a lustrous deep gloss black paint by a local body shop
Cost £100
Perfect now
Sometimes you just got to sort it properly yourself
Strip your bike yourself and get it powder coated properly for £100

Some people don’t have the skills or time to do that, but I’d be speaking to the dealer and asking them to strip it, and get it powder coated properly, at an agreed price (if at all).

Most dealers are quite reasonable, so if I had a GS and had this done more than once, I’d tell the dealer to order all the parts, so they get the costs covered under warranty, then they keep the new frame and send the old one away to be powder coated properly. Win win. :thumb

a good powder coat will have a zinc primer underneath...most just coat on top of bare steel

Not too hard
Just a question of bolting and unbolting, taking your time

Know what you mean though

Wonder how much these engines cost to make?.. was reading something on the new Ford 1 ltr units.. Fist engine to be made and built for under £100 all in! makes you think?
Is this why they can swap them out so easily?
