2016 gs triple black corrosion

My r100gs never did this.. ran it through a good few winters... its the base monkey metal they use now... any salt and it disolves ;) bit like the cams ... ask them to open a valve a few times and they disolve... shafts also...

think we should set up a protest outside BMW dealers saying how poor BM's are these days !!

You all keep buying though

So BMW won't change anything - why should they??.......when people keep throwing £20k at them for a new one

And there you have it.

Paint defects not covered on used warranty. In effect what they are saying is the paint has 3 year warranty from new. Would we accept that in the car world?

Not like for like though is it. Look at the suspension etc of a car that has been through a winter and 100% there will be surface rust. But you can’t see it so no one cares.

On a motorcycle 100% of it is considered a cosmetic area by owners. Add in road grit peppering it constantly from sticky hot rubber used on bikes and salt etc gets in. I’ve yet to own a bike of any marque that didn’t have some corrosion somewhere on it within 1 winter if used enough.

I'd never throw £20K at them.. but £12K yes... but we dare not let the warranty run out.. so we have to keep buying them :banghead:

It will be interesting to watch when the tide turns and BMW sales declines. As they sell more bikes year on year they can afford not worry to much about quality, where the smaller manufacturer has to ensure quality is decent as the warranty claims will hurt reputation and the bottom line.

It won't turn. People have been whining about quality issues since the LC came out in 2013, and sales have only got better. Now so many new sales are on PCP finance and a 3 year cycle, there's even less incentive for BMW to address anything.

So true! And they rarely give any incentives finance/luggage etc especially on the GS range as they dont have to.

Yes, that's a good point.

I was lucky with my trumpets...neither had any reliability issues in over 36,000 miles of riding. The TEX only had paint peeling on the front of the engine casing...everywhere else was mint. I must have been one of the lucky ones as plenty of others have been plagued with TC/ABS and engine management issues. New ones seem to be worse than the Mk1 Explorers! More to go wrong. In truth, BMW reliability is no worse than Triumph when you look at how many reported faults are spread over the forums. Again, I was lucky as I dealt with Cheltenham Triumph who imho are one of the best I've come across and take customer service seriously. Some others it seems don't provide the same levels of service.

Cotswold Motorrad have also been excellent. How they react to out of warranty issues remains to be seen but I guess it will depend on what it is. It's not reasonable for example to treat the ESA as a consumable on a bike out of warranty but which may only have covered under 20K miles. You'd reasonably expect to re-valve any unit or replace it at perhaps 35K miles. Ditto....extensive corrosion on a 3 or 4 yr old bike that has been cared for is not a reasonable expectation.

As you say, whether you stay with the fold does depend to a large degree, on how the dealerships treat you.

I would agree with you, I have dealt with both as have you and they have both been very helpful, especially the Blade Triumph dealer, very conscientious.:thumb2

My rear sub-frame 2015gs has a lot of small rust spots coming up from underneath the paint.
There doesn't seem to be any other corrosion apart from the main stand.
I contacted the nearest BMW dealership via email explaining the problem in detail as my bike is under their BMW used bike warranty until next Feb.
The main man there rang me and asked me if I wanted to book it in for a service. I told him I didn't, I just want to address the corrosion problem on my sub-frame.
He said that paint defects are not covered under their used bike warranty. I informed him that I am a member of a few motorcycle clubs and I would be discussing it with other BMW owners.

It didn't seem to bother him at all.
I think the sub-frame will be coming off this winter, powder-coated and put back on. I hope its not too hard to do as I'm not great with the spanners.

Ok, just to bring you up to date on this. I was in the main dealers having a look around and I got chatting to the motorrad service manager. He had a look at my sub frame and told me that he would have his tech take a few pics of it and he would try to make a case for me to BMW, but the fact that I hadn't bought the bike direct from them wouldn't help my cause.
I told him as it wasnt covered under the used bike warranty, all I wanted was some good will from BMW.

Last week he rang me and told me that BMW would supply a new sub frame for me as a good will gesture but I would have to pay for the labour.
I agreed. The bike went in yesterday and I collected it today. New sub frame fitted, 100euro. Happy days.

On another note. He gave me a loan bike for 24hrs, an XR. Very nice bike, plenty of poke and the gear shift assist was like butter, much smoother than my GS.
I was still glad to get off it and back onto my GS :)
