So, I bought a new 2017 GSA TE in December. Euro 4 engine so little slicker etc etc. let's not rehash the power debate !!!

lo and behold BMW launch a "newer" 2017 model.

Does anyone know if any of the additional electronic options (hill start and auto levelling) can be upgraded by a flash? On one hand I'm thinking that the existing imu etc should be able to sense level etc but gut feeling is hardware would be needed making it not really economically viable.

Any views?

Jimbo

The "newer" 2017 model has been known about since late summer/autumn. It's not exactly been a secret. Quite the opposite.

Flash upgrade? In your dreams, IMHO.

Hi Jimbo

Judging by your post count you are relatively new here and as such folk should take it easy on you. Not entirely sure when the updates came out and i can understand why you might be pissed off. I cannot answer as to whether the upgrade is possible. Just enjoy your new bike as its a fabulous steed (the upgrades will not make much difference IMHO)

Yes, it can be done.

But it comes with new suspension, engine and transmission, body work and electrics, an "interesting" blue colour and is yours for a mere £15•5K

Jimbo, don't worry as don't think you're missing out. I had hill start on one of my K1600's and when f ugly loaded two it was great on steep hills and very useful on this weight of bike. Can't see it's necessary on a GS. As for self levelling? Can't see the point

So I'm looking forward to a similar device for the hills of Norfolk

Hill start assist is certainly available as a software update from a dealer. When I was in the market for a used RT LC I found one that I liked but didn't have this option from new. The dealer did not know it could be updated but I Googled a bit and found a part number somewhere, from memory. It will cost a couple of hundred pounds though.

I understood when ordering that my new bike, which arrives next month wouldn't have the self levelling suspension, etc and that the changes applied to the GS only. I can't see it being a major issue (for me at least). So the OP isn't actually losing out on anything - well until 2018 at least.

Thanks for the replies. My question was more a technical one as to whether it was software (i.e. Manufacturer sweating more customer money by not reflashing retro) or one of physical constraints (new hardware). Interesting responses though. I've had loads of bikes and never really seen significant changes twice in one calendar year before (i.e. "2017") even with BMW where I've had s1000rr's earlier gs's and an xr. I didn't do any research prior to buying and the dealer said "it's the latest euro 4 2017 model". To be fair I had t picked up on the GS GSA subtlety but had assumed broadly same ecu etc.

Why on earth would you need hill start electronics? Its a core bike skill and I believe still part of the test...

I don't think anyone is saying you do 'need' it, but if it's available then why not?

You don't 'need' the majority of the other stuff (cruise, quickshifter etc etc) on a GS but it's nice to have IMHO.

Enable code for "Drive off Assistant" (Hill hold assist)

Just Googled & found the part number for a retrofit code on BMW Motorrad USA, it appears to be only available for K1600 & the RT1200 though? $229
