2018 KTM 790 Adventure

On my 690 i am running.
Michelin Tracker's with with mousse's..
Great mud plugger, noisy on the road, good road corner holding, (well for me)
Rear has done a mixture of.. Off rd.. On rd.. About 1000mls so far.. 11mm left.

Recently fitted a pair on my 701. Seem pretty good off road, but I've not been out much on them.

First impressions on road were horrendous. I'm not used to knobblies and found they had a mind of their own regarding holding any sort of line. They wanted to stand the bike up in corners, and were pretty vibes and noisey. Confidence was not great as a friend had recently binned his bike on a set, but after a few miles I thought they got noticeably better and I got more confident. Not a patch on TKC80s though on the tarmac.

Ludicrously cheap after road tyres though :thumb

Yeah, this type of tyre is fine for off-road. But truly dreadful on road unless you ride slowly. Dirt bike tyre really.

Bit squirmy, but i got used to it,but then i dont try and scrape the pegs...

Have to say these Motoz tyres that have just turned up certainly look the part. Feel sorry for the trails :D

When you put the Motoz next to the Karoo tyres the Karoo's look like toys by comparison. We'll see!

Here you go. The first 2 are fully deflated and loaded down (by me) to test whether they'd run if punctured. Ironic, because the front was flat already! See next post. Unable to take it for a spin so took the Freeride instead, still had a blast but wanted to test the tires really.

Sadly the inner spoke nut seal had been pinched (pro tire fitter...it happens) when the front tire was fitted. £35 for a new seal band...or £2.50 for a puncture repair kit. I went the latter.

Only a small hole but it pours out of the spoke nuts.

Those Motoz look like a good 50/50 tyre, I have put a tracker on the back of my 350 Husky as it was about half the price of a Michelin Medium and comes with a deeper tread.

Full off road knobblies feel pretty awful on the road to me on small trail / enduro bikes, the thought of trackers on something as fast, powerful and heavy as the 790 is pretty terrifying and probably not worth the road trade off unless your spending well over 50% of your time in dirt.

Pair of these ordered. Few issues with early ones cracking but hopefully sorted. Wanted the stiff sidewalls so i can run lower pressures. Will provide feedback but imagine they’re going to out play the Karoo’s. Hope so!

Finally a review of the Motoz Rallz.

Oh my goodness they felt terrible on road after the Karoo3’s. I rode 200 yards and went back. I was running about 20-22psi on the front of the Karoo tyres. Did the same with the Rallz but decided to go back and put 30psi in. Was a lot better. But in truth I think it’s just a case of new rubber needing scrubbing in....mostly.

Noise - louder. 30% maybe. Expected of course.

Grip - on road, so far I’d say the grip is noticeably different to the K’s. It’s more of a knobbly tire so again, expected. If you just do road work I would say the Karoo’s are a better option in all honesty.

Grip - off road - TRANSFORMATIONAL. Got in some deep mud up hill - the Karoo’s wouldn’t have coped with it really. The Rallz just dug in, cleared the mud, found the stone base and off we went. Zero drama. Very impressed! Off into the woods for some trials type riding and a similar story. Karoo’s work but not like these. You always had to have momentum to climb loose leaves, mud etc. The new ones powered me up slopes quite a few times...again, very impressed.

Longevity, we’ll see, but not bothered to be honest. If they last me 1500 miles but give brilliant grip I’m happy. That said, they should last 3X that from what I’ve read. Not that the rear Karoo lasted well. It would’ve done lots more road miles but the off-road performance drops off a cliff as it loses its sharp edges.

So these tyres are what they say they are I guess, an 80/20(?). I think the Karoo’s were a 50/50 road/off-road tyre so they were never going to be great off-road were they. That said They went everywhere I asked them to go! Just lots of effort and no small number of off’s! This afternoon/eve I didn’t drop the bike once and I was tired too. My usual drop points are unexpected stationary events when the rear spins up or front loses traction and I don’t catch it in time. I didn’t lose traction like this today, so didn’t have to pick the bike up at all - great!

So, so far so good.

Definitely considering a set of those Rall Zs for my 701 after the current Michelin Trackers wear out, and that won't be very long looking at the state of them.

Last ride just over a week ago before being locked down. 3hr of road, stone, deep water and slippery mud trails. These tyres are ‘it’. For me anyway. Just brilliant.

The only drop was a leaf strewn isolated wood when the rear span up on a partially buried in leaves branch. Apart from that the bike (and me) stayed upright. Not particularly looking to save own energy but these tyres will do that for sure. Because the bike is more planted you can relax more on the bike and that’s vital riding off-road.

Hopefully two months will see us clear of Corona and we might be allowed back out. But for now there are more pressing concerns.

Nice to see one being used. I had mine professionally cleaned and now it’s embarrassingly clean and I can’t go out.

What are the spotlights and how /where did you mount them ?

Also, what the engine guard ?

I love everything about the 790, except........the ugly fuel tank!!!

I know its not about the look of the bike, but for me a large part of it is!!!!.....is there a decal kit for the tank?....as is it draws the eye to a ugly lump of plastic.

The Husqvarna Norden 901, which looks like it is going to have the same tank arrangement solves this with a nicer bash plate / tank protector

Chris... :D

Do you want a pillion seat hump thingy ?

It simply clips in, replacing the pillion pad in seconds.

Like dis,innit....

Yes please if it's available as my seat and givi rack don't play well together

Thanks for that. Do you know the model reference as when I check their site they only seem to have seats with stripes.

Edit: found it.
