2026 KLE500

Sat on one yesterday, seemed OK but a tad budget
It was built to a budget. It's based on the old 451 Ninja drivetrain and as far as I know they didn't even bother to change the gear ratios to WR which would be better for adventure bike use. And even the higher price S version has no cruise and uses inner tube wheels. Most everything is built to low cost same as their KLR 650.

Honda's CB500X had been a successful, low cost, standard motorcycle with a hint of adventure style. To Honda's credit they made updates to the 500X making it better to actually be used as a mild adventure motorcycle with better suspension, brakes, and 19" wheel. And now with further changes to the display, electronics, a Rally Style appearance, and price drop, should sell better yet. Honda's had this "small, Japanese, 2-cylinder adventure bike" niche to themself..... until now.

I think the KLE is Kawasaki's version of the CB/NX500 only using spoke wheels to make it just a bit more off road capable. I think it's great having a choice now. The NX500 with wider cast wheels, tubeless tyres, and longish travel road suspension that works fine on gravel and mild dirt roads. KLE with narrower spoke wheels, 21" front, and just a bit longer suspension which should work even better on dirt roads as well as some off road.

Both bikes appeal to new riders but also to experienced ones, maybe as a second motorcycle or for older riders who just want something versatile yet lighter and less intimidating. This 500 twin class is enough bike to do most any kind of adventure touring, and do so very affordably.

I am quite fancying one of these, I see it as a new Versys 500 rather than a KLE though.
Will take one out for test ride.
I like my CB500X and am hoping this is better.

What other bike in the class has cruise ?
Even the bikes in the next class such as Vstrom 800 and Transalp don’t have cruise .

Being the newest Adventure bike in the hot new class, IMO Kawasaki should have offered tubeless and cruise at least as options. But they didn't and it's no big deal to many. But personally, while I may forgo cruise on this class I won't be buying a new, street motorcycle with inner tube wheels. As far as ones that do come with tubeless, off the top of my head in this class and next class:
KTM 390 Adventure (19")
NX500 (19")
Ibex 450 (21")
Ibex 800 (21") and cruise control.
Tuareg 660 (21") and cruise control.
Himalayan 400 (21") optional
Guzzi V85TT (19") and cruise control
VStrom 800RE (19")

The "MCN Verdict" doesn't sound very positive.

I'm sure it'll be a fun bike on the roads.
Not sure about off-road, just look at the sump guard in the above photo, it's nearly grounding out on flat tarmac!

Been out on an SE version this morning .
First impressions are that it feels VERY light.
Jumping off my Vstrom 800 on to the KLE, the seat height felt similar but quite a bit more cramped due higher pegs. And the bars a tad lower so rider triangle more cramped. On checking ,the KLE seat height is 870mm and the Vstrom is 855 so KLE is actually taller.
Standing on the pegs, you’d need bar risers whereas Vstrom is fine .
I took it down a bumpy dirty track and the suspension felt very compliant.
Screen is pretty good with side deflectors built in .
The motor sounds great and feels quite revvy. From memory it certainly has more go than the CB/NX500.
Pretty much perfect fuelling and it’ll pull happily from 30mph in 6th.
Handling seems very light and it goes where you aim it, certainly a bit more ‘twitchy’ than the Vstrom.
Clutch is very light . No quick shifter which I forgot at least four times !
Jumping back on the Vstrom, it instantly felt more roomy .
Not sure why the pegs are so high on the KLE. I have removed the rubbers from my Strom and could do same on KLE but that won’t make more than 10/20 mm difference .

You could certainly have some fun on the road using the full rev range and the agile handling .Fit bar risers and it would be fun on trails , allowing for the not massive ground clearance .

Think it’ll sell quite well.

Been out on an SE version this morning ...

I think the KLE is great looking especially the gray one you rode and the white with green frame. Did you notice much engine vibration? MCN as well as another review I read commented on vibration but some people seem more sensitive than others.

Didn’t notice any but I wasn’t looking for it , if that makes sense .

That's a good sign that if it has some it's not much.
