20kv wire for HIDS

I need approx 60-70cm of wire that can take 20,000 volts to lengthen HID wires. I believe it has to be silicon insulated. Maplin don't sell any and RS Components offers it in bundles of £300+ .

Ideas? Oh, and I really would like it for tomorrow - so if you know of any populous shop that might sell it then let me know.

Colebatch - HID 'extension wires'

Colebatch was going to get some a while back (I put my order in), but I have not heard back yet.

You could try dropping him a PM - but unlikely that you'll get tomorrow.

I suspect that, making your own leads, it is the joints that are going to be much more preblematic than the cable.

As I understand it from a colleague, you can't just add any length to the HID cable, you have to add cable in multiples of a certain length. If you already know this, then that's fine, but if you don't, you could be in for quite a surprise .

I'll dig out some more info for you if you want.

No I didn't but I presume it's got something to do with the frequency that they run at. Unfortunately no suppliers can offer high voltage wire so I've found some stuff with the thickest rubber outer I can find ... and some fish tank hose.

Here goes nothing ...

At the frequencies in use, the signal bounces around in the cables, a bit like ripples on water. The ripple pattern changes with the length of the cable, get the length wrong and the 20kV ripples add up to 40kV, and the wire acts like a short circuit to the control circuitry. I'm sure you can appreciate that this is "not a good thing" (tm).

I'm looking for more concrete info, but you might want to drop a PM to Egon as I think he had the tools and info to mod his HIDs.

The fish tank hose worked!!!!

Oh my fecking god it is awesome!!!!

Two Hella De's and an H4 on top, it's something else! :clap:clap:clap:clap

Sounds like I should be able to spot you if we bump into each other then.
I'll wave. If I can still see of course.:D
Well done - the 'fish tank' hose made me smile.:clap:clap
