Hi Gents,
I was wondering whether it is possible to mount a 21" rim on a 2003 F650 GS (fitted with a 19") without any modifications.

Isn't the fork different (longer excursion on the Dakar) so there may be some issue with the fork "coupler" ? (With this I mean the piece which holds the fender in place :blast).

Thank you in advance :bow.

Cheers

There is certainly more travel in the Dakar forks but I have no idea if that is achieved through different internals or a completely new set of forks.

Thanks for your quick reply Mav.

By reading your reply I think I did not make my question clear.

Correct question should be as follows: Is a 21" (Dakar) rim going to fit on a STD F650 GS fork with no modification need, regardless of the different travel ?

Is it going to fit in-between the wheel pin and the fork coupler ? That's my doubt :nenau

To fit a 21" rim to a GS you will need a pair of spacers that lift the fork brace the couple of inches it needs to clear the wheel, you can get these from your friendly neighbourhood BMW dealer for about £15 if I remember rightly.

Yes,you'll need the spacers (and bolts). They're not 2 inches(!) more like 20mm.
Other than that the 21" should be a straight swap - axle, spacers, disc etc. are all the same.I'm running a 19" on my Dakar and it was a direct replacement.

As above :thumb2

But one thing to think of :rob once you have fitted the 12" wheel, will it foul the frame or radiator? (under full compression) It's probable that this won't be an issue. But if it turns out to be so you will only need to replace the chrome stantions with the longer Dakar ones 'the ally fork legs are the same on both bikes'.

The down side of fitting the bigger front wheel and maybe longer stantions, is that the bike will now sit down at the back making for slow or lazy steering 'a bit odd at walking pace'. You will need to fit the longer rear shock.

I've done the same as TallTony.... fitted a 19" wheel to my Dakar... straight swop, no probs. 19" front and standard rear with Tourance's for normal road use, 21" front standard rear with TKC's for off roading.

There's only about half an inch difference in the actual radius between the 21" wheel and the 19" because of the difference in profile of the tyres.... so no real problem there.

Not so sure of the 12" conversion though Val.H
