22 year old son
2024 CRF300 Rally
A2 licence
Had his 125 nicked in 2022
No insurance since
No NCB

Recent quote £4300

Thoughts, reflections, feelings ?

All advice gratefully received. I imagine me insuring him with me as main driver is the way forward?? I will ride it loads too, so it’s not a complete lie

Presumably you’ve added as much useful security (Datatag) as possible?

Postcode can be a real hinderance (I’m in a Norfolk shithole) but any benefit of it being kept at your house.

Clearly I’m not condoning insurance fraud etc, but use what you can……

the risk is your insurance record would be tainted if the scrote magnet bike got nicked or the young chap had a pique of over-exuberance into, for example, a row of nuns at a bus stop

has he tried a quote through a proper broker rather than a screen scraping robot? He might need to do something he has never done before and make an actual phone call ...

?? Not the best closing statement to post regarding insurance??

Get him to buy a cb100 or similar and buzz it round for a few years tpft to get a couple of years ncb,

Get him to add YOU as a named driver, that may help

Why not if it’s true? I will ride it loads and the bike will be kept at my house. He works in London 🙄

Anyway we’re leaving for France tomorrow afternoon on the bikes 😄

Do whatever you can to reduce the premium for him.

Have you tried around different companies? You don’t say what level of insurance your son is looking for. The quote must be nearing the value of the bike. Try a different bike with 3rd party coverage only for a year or 2. There was a deauville on here for £250 recently. Just an idea of what’s out there. Make sure you have an alarm. Won’t stop someone stealing it but insurance company’s love them. JJH

By the way my first bike was a Honda 125ss in about 1976. Insurence was 60. I had a fairly cathoic late teens early 20s. No bad insurance history but in 1983 my insurance for a z650 was £817. I was clearing £63 a week. All dates may not be exact but best my memory can come up with. The money is right. I was doing a few nights a week as a roadie so I was doin ok. Never went short of a point or fag anyway. JJH

Which is it?
I'd be very careful about a little white lie on an insurance policy or I can foresee a future 'rant' about how you've been stitched up with the renewal/refused renewal etc
It sounds like he needs to do the usual internet search/broker ring round and hope he finds somewhere that'll do a policy at a more palatable amount.

Exactly what i was trying to impart, no such thing as a white lie in insurance company's eyes, and to makes things worse, its in print, on the web :nenau

just get third party only cover and a cheap cg125 bike

  • Fewer miles.
  • More physical security.
  • Garaged / Secure Armadillo box or similar.
  • Lower risk bike.
  • Get married
  • buy a house
  • become a librarian.
  • No commuting, pillion or business use.
  • Lexham do cheaper deals with larger compulsory excess.
  • Increase voluntary excess
  • Apply for the policy to start 21 days in the future.
  • Any combination of the above.

But he won’t be building up any NCB will he ?
No they won't but when I got a quote for my son recently they now ask an additional question. Do they have any years as a named driver on someone's else's policy, so I think it helps.
