Hi there I am just wondering are stena out of Belfast not doing the 25 pound day trip returns anymore. I used them a lot but been out of biking a year
Many thanks.....

They were at end of last year ... suspect they still are , but you may have to ask ! (At least they can be talked to ... friend did two day returns last year ....... each time he travelled the first way with no bike ....... ebay / gumtree collections made in Scotland !!)

They don't appear to have the offer on just now, I certainly used it 2013 for a trip to UGP

Ah bugger it's too dear now. It was good value before. I even got over a few times for 15 pound on selected dates

fired a post up on their facebook and fair play they got back pretty quick -

Hi Martin, we are in the process of re-launching some of our day trip offers on our website. If you would like to PM us your contact number
we can get an agent to give you a call with a price.

Here's hoping they bring the offer back

Bollocks, I went over about 8 times last year on the £25 deal. So that's me out now as that just isn't value for money. So instead of them getting up to £200 off me, they'll get zero this year. I intend to have a week around Scotland at some point, so am happy enough to pay what's needed, but day trips are now off the agenda. :(

Same here, friend and myself were over about half a dozen times last year. Not paying £50 for a day trip that's for sure.

I booked for a week in May. 68 pounds return using discount code. No way i would pay 50 pounds. Maybe we should all get onto fb and complain like feck.

Here's the email I've just sent off to Stena.

Dear Sir,

I see that the £25 day return crossing for motorcycles is now no longer available for 2014. To say the least, I am very disappointed that someone has come up with this 30 hour return as it really serves no purpose other than to ramp up the cost to those wishing for a simple day out in the north of the UK mainland. This new service now promotes the need for an overnight stay in a B&B or hotel to take full advantage of the 30 hour window, otherwise, I and many other fellow motorcyclists still have to come back on the same day for work or family commitments and therefore in reality, this has doubled the cost for a day return. If I take the 03:30 ferry to Cairnryan, I still need to catch the 07:30 ferry to Belfast the following day so as to not fall foul of the new 30 hour regulation. Ergo, spending needlessly on a B&B or coming home on the same day for what is a 100% increase in fare. Personally, I have used the bikers day return several times per year for the past number of years and all I see is an exploitation of the monoply that exists towards customers like me that has enjoyed a day trip to Scotland or northern England in the recent past. This new deal is already being discussed in length on several motorcycle forums and to say the least, it is not going down well with all those interested parties saying that they will not be spending their money with Stena as it appears to be sheer greed that has brought this new deal about. I believe that Stena have scored an own goal in trying to fleece the motorcycle day trip parties and wonder if you really want to provide a service for the motorcycling community beyond those travelling abroad for their holidays of longer than 30 hours ? Personally, I cannot see me spending £50 on a day trip to Scotland for one day let alone the several I usually take throughout the year. I hope that someone in the ivory tower will take on board my concerns and reinstate the simple day return offer at a reasonable cost.

Yours faithfully,

I await my response with baited breath.

Well worded Davy,hope someone listens.

This was my reply as a PM on Facebook -

Hi Martin, we have checked with the relevant department and unfortunately the £25 day trip offer is no longer available for 2014. The day trip available for 2014 £50. Hope this helps!

Isn't that a pain in the arse! +1 - here's hoping someone see's sense with Davy F's e-mail. Keep us posted! :-)

Funnily enough, no reply as yet. Hopefully, the management are mulling over my points and will have a rethink. Maybe other interested bikers should go down the same route and email them directly as I have done to voice their disgust.

Yep, was thinking the same thing myself. Will wing off something along the same line as yours, only different. Yes they'll make more per biker but you'd think overall, less bikers will use same so net they'll take in less money.

Hi Stena Line,

We've been loyal Stena Line customers for quite some time now having made many trips back and forth between Belfast > Stranraer and as of late Cairnryan by car, car & caravan, motorbike and motorhome.

Every time we've enjoyed your services and indeed our holiday once on the mainland.

We had one of our best holidays in Scotland by Motorbike in 2012 .... our appetite having been wetted by availing of one of your Biker Day Return trips previously.

We where looking forward to availing to your Biker Day Return again this year. Once or twice for pleasure and once to combine two of our favourite hobbies, motorcycling and geocaching by booking a Biker Day Return in August this year to allow us to attend our first ever Mega Geocaching Event which is taking place at Ayr.

Now from previous occasions, we're aware that dates for your Biker Day Return trips are released early on in the year and so we sat and waited for same to be released this year.

Imagine our horror and disappointment that you have chosen to ramp the price up to a shocking £50 this year. While I understand that you can now choose to return up to 30 hours after landing .... I wonder how many people will actually choose to do this? After all, a Biker Day Return is simply that ..... out and back the same day?!

I could perhaps understand if you sought opinions far and wide from the motorcycling community but judging by the volatile reaction against this new offer on several motorcycle discussion forums, I suspect not.

I wonder has Stena Line shot themselves in the foot here? Yes, for one booking, Stena Line stands to make more money but I fear the big downside is, motorcyclists will simply vote with their feet or perhaps bikes and just not bother as much with this offer and overall, revenue from us for this type of offer will drastically reduce?

Come on Stena Line, please have a re-think ... our bikes don't take up that much room on your ferry. While I expected an increase in price from last year, say perhaps up to £30 ... what you have put out seems to have been ill thought out.

Would it perhaps be a good idea to offer the traditional Biker Day Return as you have always done at a reduced price and keep the more expensive 30hr Return for those that may perhaps need to avail of same thereby offering your customers better choice?

I look forward to your comments and hope to continue to sail with you in the future.

Regards,

just posted on their bakebook there ..... should we not bombard them rather than just 1 or 2 people saying mmm not happy with you

Just left a reply myself.

Still waiting for my email reply, so I'll comment here. This is a poorly thought out ploy to fleece motorcyclists by doubling the cost in real terms for the now defunct day return ticket. It adds a B&B cost if you want to take full advantage of the 30 hour return limitations and in reality, I suspect everyone will need to come back on the same day. Ergo, a 100% hike in the fare from last year disguised as if Stena are doing us a favour. No-one I know wants this and sees through the offer for what it is, a drive for profit at the motorcyclists expense. Ultimately, we'll all be losers. The bikers lose out on fun days in Scotland and Stena will lose out on the valuable trade that has built over the past few years and is so short-sighted of whoever came up with this so called 'deal'. Shame on you Stena for profiteering on what is already seen as a monopoly trade for crossing the sea to mainland UK.
