Hey you can't own a location man!!
Hi All,

Just a question, but how much info can you get on a 1GB card? The thing is I want to travel throughout North and South America with but don't to take the computer with me so how much memory will I need to hold all the info for those area's?

I await bad news me thinks!

Cheers

I dunno how many you might need, but why not just chuck huge sections of the maps on to a number of CF cards?

That way, you know you'll have the maps somewhere (label the CF cards!).

Obviously, you might need to overlap, but with 1GB CF cards (and you don't need the latest, fastest cards) at around £35 each, it's not 'too' expensive.

Also, as CF cards can 'break' it might be helpful not to have all your maps in one card.

OK just as a rough guide,
I have all of N.I. ... Southern Scotland, Northern England, most of Holland, Belgium, Germany, all of Austria, Northern Italy, Switzerland, large part of Eastern France takes up about 488 MB of 512MB CF card, which I got with the 2610 unit.

Some of the guys on advrider (or perhaps our Jose, aka 'The Celt') might have the exact size of the Americas :beerjug:

The latest Mapsource release for City Navigator Europe takes about 1.74GB. A 2Gb CF card does nicely!! No swopping and you can change your mind where you want to go - marvellous. I wouldn't think that the one for South America carries much more data.

Can't seem to find the map for South America, does anyone know which it is?

The other thing is if I use a 2GB card, are there any problems with that much info on one card, does the 2610 have any problems accepting it?

Cheers

Up to 2 GB is fine.

The SP2610 uses the FAT file system which has a 2 GB limit.
(What happens when the mapping gets bigger than 2 GB ???)
