Hello Friends

I did the obligatory searches, and can find no definitive answers. So, here goes nothing ....

Yes or No; Does the Touratech metal cradle cause problems for allot of folks when it comes to satellite reception? I've seen two (2) posts in my searches that hint at this problem, but no wide-spread clamor.

I like the sturdiness if the TT cradle, but not so much so that I'm willing to drop more dosh for the external antenna and then suffer the headache of routing/mounting it.

Please, if you've suffered ill effects from the use of this cradle, tell me so (here or PM if you wish); I'll be buying something to support the 2610, but I want security (as in well-mounted) and ease-of-use.

I won't ask about the best way to power it .... :blast:D:thumb:clap

Cheers!

OK, well, there you go ... thank you Steve, I'm off to locate another cradle .... any thoughts?

Cheers!

An external antenna can be had for as little as a fiver off ebay - I have to use one in the car because I've got a metallic screen.

For the bike I just use the RAM cradle - it's not secure, but then I wouldn't leave the GPS on the bike anyway, even if I had the locking TT cradle.

Thanks ... OK, so I'll be using the RAM cradle, as I plan to remove the 2610 when I'm off the bike anyway. And, I won't need to bother with the external antenna ....

Cheers!

This earlier link may help and explain why..http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=120695

Thanks Steve ... that is one of the two threads I found showing the TT cradle to possibly be a bad idea. He wrapped his excess antenna cable around the 2610, so I can understand the signal-reception problem. I won't do that ... :)

So, in your opinion, the TT cradle is a bad idea (without the external antenna) correct? Your handle ... Ram-Man .... any connection to RAM mounts?

Hi Retro .... tell me more .... have you experienced no issues with poor reception using the 2610 on the TT cradle? Which cradle are you using? I'm looking at the all-steel locking with the MGV suspension. I would really prefer the TT cradle over the Garmin or similar, but at $170.00usd, I need to know that I'll not have to buy a slew of other products for it to operate well.

Thanks Friends for all of your input. I know I don't post here much, and I appreciate your taking the time to throw some wisdom my way. As I ride something other than a BMW (:augie), I don't have much to contribute, other than the occasional ride report from here in the Colonies. But the ideas, thoughts, and pictures I see are most excellent.

Cheers!

I have the TT locking cradle for the 2610.Occasionally i loose reception in Cities,it was appalling in Glasgow right in the centre and becomes v slow in London.I have communicated to Garmin about this and they recomend an external ariel i got one of Ebay they are real cheap. Not been in a built up area yet to try.But I would have the TT cradle and an ariel.Reception is never an issue realy.Got me round The Alps ,Scotland,France and Spain etc no worries. One thing tho I have my bracket mounted high over the instrument panel on a home made bracket I cam eMail pics should ya want to.

Occasionally reception would dib out in forests and narrow streets in cities, but nothing to cause any real probs. If in doubt, fit a cheapo aerial. I had the same model cradle TT as you, its a work of art. That being said I've recently sold it and gone for the MiGSel system as I'd prefer the unit to be mounted above the clocks in the 'Head Up' position.

I have a TT 2610 mount on both bikes and have no issues with loss of reception, looking back over the last 3 years of 2610/TT use I can only think of one occasion when I lost reception and that was in Spain. Also IMHO the TT 2610 mount is second to none (I use the dual shock versions)

Ive never heard of any problems with the touratech mounts with the 2610's and ive sold bucket loads of them and also used them on the bikes. The only problem ive found on the 2610's is with the weather if its been overcast so not a good reception or it can run slightly slower. But never due to the cradles

Thank you again ....

OK, so what I'm reading is that the TT mount *more than likely* won't cause too many undue issues ... that's good to hear, as I'm really liking it more than the other options anyway. And, even if I DO have to buy an external antenna, it's not that big a deal.

The 2610 should be here by tomorrow or Saturday, so I'll make a final decision at that point. But right now, it looks like the TT is the way to go .... my thanks to everyone for all input.

Ride safe, and be well.

Cheers!
