Hi,

My head hurts after trying to download some offroad routes to my Garmin 2610 and wondered if anyone has come across these problems before:

I initially used memorymap without success as getting download error of 'route truncated', so then tried garmin mapsource but also getting download error of 'route truncated', after some surfing found a potential workaround of using 'via waypoints' and dragging the route to roughly follow the intended route as instead of using individual waypoints. Apparently using 'via waypoints' instead of 'waypoints' doesn't eat into the 500 waypoint limit of the 2610.

So I created a new route of approx 80 miles with two waypoints for 'start' and 'end' and approx 400 'via points'.

This new route downloaded successfully without the 'route truncated' error - result I thought lol

However when viewing the route on the unit at work in office (gps off as indoors) it only shows the first 5 miles of the route ie missing 75 miles of the route.

I then tried to see if I could find anything I had done wrong in mapsource so started to investigate the 'route' and found in the route properties under the 'directions' tab that it lists all the 'via points' and I then noticed that the route being displayed on the unit (albeit only ~5 miles) coincided with the first 50 'via points' in the list of ~400 via points.

Does that mean the when dealing with ROUTES that the 2610 can ONLY display 50 items ie 50 direction changes or 50 waypoints/via ponts?

Or have I missed something or done something wrong?

If it helps currently mapsource (v6.15.3) shows :
routes=1
tracks=1 (not being downloaded currently)
waypoints=39

Cheers
Glenn

First question - did you delete all the previous data before you loaded up the next attempt?

'did you delete all the previous data before you loaded up the next attempt?'
I deleted the previous routes so there were no routes stored.

Also as a check I just transfered data from unit to pc and now in mapsource I see :
routes = 1
tracks = 0
waypoints = 185

Which confirms you left a load of waypoints on the gps when you deleted the routes - I think? You need to start with no waypoints in the gps and no routes. You need to double check the number of waypoints (as opposed to via points) that you are trying to upload. If it still doesn't work, try splitting your route into say four parts, by cutting and pasting sections out of the route properties into different instances of mapsource, then bringing the four routes back into one file and sending them all up to the gps.

OK but as far as I know the limit for the 2610 is 500 waypoints ... and at 185 I'm well below that limit ... Its only a day route round Hertfordshire trails that I'm trying to download and it seems abit over the top to have to 'wipeout' the unit for each route I want to download or to have to split it up into 4 parts, but I'll give it a go and report back.

I thought I'd update this post incase it helps others, might save them some time ...

So I cleared out all routes and waypoints from my 2610 and then used Mapsource to create a new route with 'start' and 'end' waypoints and 50 'via waypoints' and this downloaded to the 2610 WITHOUT 'route truncated' error.

However adding one more ie 'start' and 'end' waypoints and 51 'via waypoints' gave 'route truncated' error on download, so unless others have suggestions it appears the 2610 unit cannot do more than 50 points/directions changes contained within a route ... shame.

However I have been trying a different approach today and may have found a way to display offroad trails with some degree of resolution ... instead of creating a new route I've found if I take a previously saved breadcrumb 'track' and using Mapsource change the 'Name' in my case 'Herts 1' to 'ACTIVE LOG.001' and then download to the 2610 it gives no errors and appears to display the whole track from start to finish which is 1128 points.

I should be out on the trail in a couple of weeks time so can report back if it all goes horribly wrong :D

If you have track information for the routes you are trying to create, then you should try using WinGDB3, available here:

http://www.sackman.info/

I have used it very successfully for the type of thing you are trying to do, i.e. off road routes from previously collected tracks.

Quick update :

Using the 'ACTIVE LOG.001' download trick seems to have worked for the 2610 in that I can download a previous saved track (from a 60csx in my case) and so the 2610 can display track/route and its more than 50 waypoints .... but the visibility of the track/route is very poor as its colour-little black dots on yellow background(day colour scheme) does not 'stand out' very well compared to the main roads-red, and other roads-green.

So I'm trying to work out how to change the track/route to a more visible colour - no luck so far from google or 2610 user manual ... anyone know if this is possible?

Shame the 60csx display is so small ... as this is useful for multiple tracks and its ability to change track colour to many choices...

Boredrider - Thanks for suggestion of WinGDB3m, which I might try if I can work out how to make the 2610 track display more visible.

Cheers
