Well after much reading I went and bought myself a 2720 :D , and as I thought I am now waiting for a power/audio cable. However, in the meantime I also aquired a non working car power/speaker lead which I have now opened up to reveal the internal wiring. Two power wires, two speaker wires and two other wires that terminate in the little two pin socket on the side of the lighter plug. Now, what I want to know is can I wire the speaker leads to a 2.5mm audio socket and connect it to an ear peice or will it need some other modification bearing in mind the plug speaker was a 2/3w? In other words will the garmin audio output damage a small earphone? I was thinking of one of those nifty little covert type ear pieces?

To the best of my knowledge, you can hook up the audio output of any Garmin GPSR directly to an earphone, headset, small speaker, etc. It is not a 'powered output' - in fact, if you want to hook it up to a 'big' speaker, you have to use a speaker that has some kind of internal amplification system.

In other words - you should be pretty safe doing what you want to do. Just hold the little earphone a safe distance away from your head the first time you turn it on - that way, if it explodes like an atomic bomb when the GPSR issues its first voice guidance instruction, you won't be picking the pieces out of your skull for the next month or so... :D
