Such is the nature of this warm, wet winter that I haven't had the opportunity to re-create the problem yet beyond once in the middle of December when I had left the unit to "acclimatise" for some 20 minutes... and still had the same problem

So, thank you for the name. When I have photographic evidence, I'll call them back...

I think you'll find that Garmin quote a degree of water resistance, which is subtly different to claiming it's waterproof. I'd guess the Garmin "vents" have NRV's to try and prevent water ingress. Plus goretex has "vent" holes but most people consider it "waterproof".
