I tried to update my 2820 maps to Version 9 at the weekend but got some kind of error code at 92% complete, leaving my 2820 with NO detailed maps whatsoever

The DVD did not allow for a retry, so I've e-mailed Garmin & they have sent me a pdf file that details how to get into the Garmin memory, delete the incorrectly installed mapset and replace it with the new maps.

The whole process was laid out in easy to understand terms.

The pdf file is almost 700KB, so I can't post it here, but if anyone wants a copy, pm me your e-mail address & I'll forward the e-mail from Garmin.

I've just been out in the car to test it out, and everything is OK. A word of warning, it deletes all your favourites stored in the unit, so make sure you've got them backed up on your pc to re-install them afterwards.

Can't figure out how to send you a PM? I would be grateful for a copy of the email.... thanks

Sugar Ray....sounds like very useful info....If you'd like to email it to me ( fanum1*at*gmail*dot*com ), I should be able to break down the PDF file and repost it as a sticky in the Faq section :thumb

Delete old map source on 2820

Just had to do this on my garmin 2820 not to up grade but as I somehow lost pre installed maps, apparently on pre installed software you must delete the old mapsource files before you can re install from mapsource in the usaual way instructed to do as as follows:

1. Connect Garmin Unit to computer with power and USB
2. When boots up choose mass storage option
3.Open My Computer on your computer and select garmin Drive
4.Delete file with name gmapprom.img (this is a large file)
5. open map source and select maps you require and transfer in the normal way takes around one hour to complete the process.
Hope this helps anyone.
