32nm - bit tight for the sump plug you think?

Just done my own service yesterday.

Put the sump plug in. Tightened it up by hand as far as I dare using the torque wrench but not to the 32 the manual wants.

Worried about stripping the threads on the sump as 32 does seem frikkin tight. Is it necessary to put it all the way to 32nm.

There could of course be the fact that my torque wrench is not working properly.

So how tight should 32nm feel by hand.
 
I know exactly what you mean :D

The first time I changed the fluids on my 1100 (using new aluminium crush washers), it felt horribly like the threads in the gearbox etc were stripping. I think that the sickening 'plastic' sensation is the crush washers doing their stuff.

I have noticed that if I just tighten as far as my mechanical sensitivity allows (quite a bit short of the specified torques), I get leaks from the plugs. So now i just set the wrench and trust the nice German designers who specified the torques. ;)
 
Not something I've ever worried about. the 11xx is now 16yrs old. And I can't say that its a common tale of woe 'stripping the sump plug' - just be sensible. If the thing falls on the floor - be sure to clean it. And always use an alu crush washer (supplied with a service kit)

Think its Motomartin who doesn't use a washer - just gives the plug an extra 1/4 turn and hasn't managed to strip the thread.


aside from that - if the thing was liable to stripping then I'm pretty sure 'he who must be obeyed' would've flagged a warning about it by now.

When did you last have your torque wrench calibrated?
Might be the reason for the nut feeling too tight
I rarely use a torque wrench - a good tight feel on the end of the spanner always works for me......:augie
 
I've never used a torque wrench on a sump plug :eek And never had any fall out or stripped any threads.

In fact i think the only times i use a torque wrench is when doing cylinder heads etc.

And even then i don't worry about the accuracy of the torque wrench, it's just so all the nuts/bolts are tightened to the same strength.
 
i tried torquing my old 1150 sump plug up to specc once. seemed way too tight to me, so i did it by feel thereafter. it never came out.

nowadays i put a little bit of weak loctite (222 i think) on most drain plug threads and they never leak.

Tis new. Made sure I used it at low torque settings first to lubricate it. Never needed one before. Not sure I even need one now - then again this is the first bike I've owned and the first engine I've had that is not cast Iron all over.

I've never felt the need to use one upto now. Just not sure which parts of the bikes engine are alu yet. Been used to working on diesels and mainly HGV engines which all have one setting - as tight as you can get it..

Went back today and torqued it upto 32nm. About another 1/8 turn on from where it was so it was there or there about.
 
So is that 32 apples falling on yer head a meter high, or the squish factor of a granny smith:augie

the squish factor depends on what u use, but you shouldnt torture O A P,S
